Right, I agree. But I'm really referring to the overall style or approach. For instance, the animated film "Surf's Up" was done in documentary style in terms of how the characters were aware of a camera being present. This would be what initially seems like random or mundane raw "footage"...

When it comes to digital, I would rather underexpose than overexpose. You can recover detail in shadows, but once you've got blown-out white areas, that info is gone.

For standard DSLR videogarphy it's all electronic shutter (held open initially, then stays that way while you record)... so mechanical shutter failure isn't really an issue unless you were using a DSLR for stop-motion or otherwise heavy/continuous picture-taking. EDIT: ItDonnedOnMe beat me to...
