Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

Because it was mentioned in another thread, here is a tip: Make the movie as long as it needs to be. If you have a story that can be told in 60 minutes, don't stretch it to the usual 90 minutes. It will bore your audience until they dream a dream in a dream in another dream.

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

Yeah, finally a person that feels the same like me! I haven't seen it in the theater and instead watched it on DVD. Take away the beautiful visuals and special effects and you have a meaningless pile of pretentious crap lying before you. The plot with his wife gives nothing to the story and I...

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

"Slow" is NOT "boring"! Look at some tv shows (f.e. Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire). They develop their plots VERY slow, but they are interesting and really not boring. Believable characters, plots that matter and the overall theme is much more important. Also, special effects as fillers are the...

Is using a clapper board really necessary in the age of scratch tracks?

Why not include the girlfriend in the tasks of slating and continuity?;) You can persue your hobby AND you make your girl happy, because she is soooooooo important for the success of the movie :D Also, girls like to remember their boyfriends of everything they have forgotten although they...

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

You're right, fear is much more "common" around people, than humour. It's a condition that's easier to "trigger".

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

Yeah I'm there with you, but I think you have to split technical and other aspects. Hell yeah, If you have 500.000 to spend on cameras, audio and all that technical stuff, that's great. But your Film may be still trash with a bad story and horrible acting (Look at the big Hollywood crap pile...

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

A big factor in every aspect of life is to learn what YOUR niche is and then stick to it. If you are a guy that likes to cut hair, then cut hair and if you are ambitious enough, you'll be a first class coiffeur who gets invited to sniff coke at Naomi Campbells parties. That's because Tarantino...

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

Yeah, but why is this a budget problem? It's a problem of bad screenwriting and wrong casting decisions. Maybe the tip should rather be "if you want to film a comedy, learn what humour is. If you want to shoot a horror movie, learn what fear is". Budget isn't the problem in my opinion, it's bad...

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

The reason because some indies are boring is not because they are filmed differently. They ARE boring, plain simple.

Why is a comedy harder to make with zero/no budget? Yeah, you can't pay big talents but why is this a problem?

What makes a good film GREAT!

I think this "quirkiness" you are referring to is some kind of style. Some directors have it, most don't. Wes Anderson is one that has it. Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch, too. I don't think it is just ONE element. EDIT: But well... boobs are always great!

Every shot in 'Children of Men' that is 45 seconds or longer.

First: I love Sigur Ros. They are the shit! Second: Children of Men is not just well written, it has superb art direction and acting. The cinematography puts all these pieces together in a brilliant way! Filming a battle scene in one continuous shot is something that should be done more...

    A little Common Sense

The house was paid off, so it was not very expensive to keep the house for a year. But it was unnecessary. Well, if I had to pay 12 grand for a storage unit, no matter what memories I want to keep sealed in there.. I just couldn't afford that. Where do these people take the money to do this?

    Directors: What are your goals?

Making a movie that cost me 5k to make and looks like 500k were spent.

    Titanic Greengrass style

Shaky cam is the same pest like CGI these days. Directors use these techniques without considering if it HELPS the film. Look at some of the big 90's action movies. Does anybody here think that they would be better with this shaky crap? Speed? Die Hard? The Lethal Weapon Series? EDIT: Well the...

    A little Common Sense

When my grandma died some years ago, she left a house with a big and nice garden. Not much worth, but still a nice place to be. Mum, my two uncles and my aunt decided that no one of them wants it. But about ONE YEAR went, until they finally sold it.. not because there were no buyers. The older...

    I arrived. Finally.

Yeah, you are SO right. The problem by having these ideas is, that you will NEVER get them out of your head. I got a full notebook with ideas, some of them totally silly and moronic, but there are also some good ones. One I'm working on very hard at this point is an (how else could it be...

    I arrived. Finally.

Hi guys! I visited this forum a long time ago as a guest and made an account in September last year. Now, after many months, I finally got the courage to post and be part of this community. I am a 26 years old guy from Germany, and... wait. No. This summer, I'll hit the 27. Wow, time really is...
