    Is "mise-en-scène" bullshit?

Yes, so what does that have to do with the definition of the term mise-en-scene? Yes, and as I said, visuals includes aspects that mise-en-scene doesn't. I wouldn't really consider choreography part of visuals, either. I don't know about your program, but we talk about sound a lot, and...

    Is "mise-en-scène" bullshit?

That's called blocking. MiniJamesW: Mise-en-scene is the effort that goes into a film before recording it. Like you said in your OP, it's the setting of the stage, and encompasses things like costumes and lights. It's like the world building that is done before the camera is there. Different...

Does cinema need a punk rock?

I think there are enough films being made that any type you want is out there, but you have to dig to find them. Only a specific type ("Hollywood establishments") actually have hype, money and a massive audience. And that's probably not going to change anytime soon, because that's the type of...

    How do I do rewrites?

It's up to you. I usually directly edit the draft, but I go page by page and rewrite everything from scratch. It's like starting a new file, but it's nice to be able to read ahead and see where I am supposed to be going with a particular scene, so I keep it all in the same place. I usually back...

    cinematography horror

Suspense is based on the audience expecting something scary to happen. Basically, suspense is the moment between cause and effect, and one trick is to simply extend that time. Pick that scary something, like, say, a monster appearing. Describe the elements of the monster one by one. Don't say...

what are film styles ? I dont get it or how a film falls under one

Film style broadly refers to the set of conventions that a given film/filmmaker uses. Some categories of styles are conscious decisions by filmmakers to adhere to some philosophic ideal of what filmmaking is, like Expressionism, while others, like Film Noir, are named after the fact because a...

    editing my no0b moment -- WMM ?

I played with 2.6 for a long time (back when XP was still around... RIP). It doesn't handle large projects well at all, and generally froze on me if the timeline was longer then 5 minutes, but it was decent. I don't know about 6.0, but you could write your own codec profiles, transitions, and...

    Is my premise believable?

I could see it working. For it to work with me (as an audience), you'd have to spend quite some time on how they get the firearms and what type they are, because it doesn't seem easy to just smuggle a couple of assault rifles into anywhere. They'd most likely need outside help, in any case. And...

Should a movie be judged from the time of it's release, or how well it stands today?

I use different ways of judging films, but if someone simply asks me which I like better, I don't consciously take into account their release date. However, I know that if M were released tomorrow--exact same movie frame for frame and assuming the original never happened--I wouldn't enjoy it...

archived-videos Hope and Disappointment short film

This past spring I shot this short film. With 10 people involved, it was the biggest production I've done, and in my opinion the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkV-gbMblUc Everyone was a volunteer, we borrowed most of the equipment, filmed on campus over weekends, and edited with free...

Looking for a film with solo actor

All is Lost (2013) has one actor and no dialogue. It's a good film, too.

    Looking For Help Writing...

With 5 min, you need to pack a lot of information into every scene. For example, a scene that JUST builds a character without also advancing the plot, or doing something else important is wasteful. Build character using posture, clothes, locations, sounds, cinematography, etc, whenever possible...

    Looking For Help Writing...

It seems like you're making something character driven, so perhaps you should first form your character. I suppose that the first thing I'd ask myself is whether you want the film to be realistic, or more fantastic (and I don't mean fantasy like Harry Potter). Is the girl going to behave like an...

What lenses for shooting film on a M4/3?

Yes, it adapts nikon F lens to MFT. I don't have enough experience to recommend anything authoritatively. The "Lens Turbo" is a cheaper copy of the Speed Booster, so if you're going for optical quality don't get the lens turbo. There are three reasons I chose Nikon, but again I'm not super...

What lenses for shooting film on a M4/3?

A long lens with a big aperture will have the shallowest depth of field. I recently got a cheap Nikon to MFT lens turbo, which reduces crop factor and increases aperture. If you need shallow dof, you could get something similar.

editing Good free software for movies - need advices

If you're going for free or cheap, it's unlikely that the software will work together. You can use of Blender for 3d modelling, uv mapping, camera tracking, animating, and compositing. I've heard of motion capture addons, but never tried them.

Wanted: Short Giallo or Home Invasion Script

Out of curiosity, was the mine by any chance? I honestly don't remember whether I wrote for this thread or another.

    sound Your favorite soundtrack?

Some of my favorites are Morricone's , especially Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The Lord of the Rings, Cloud Atlas, and Goodbye Lenin! also spring to mind.

    Interstellar - Official Trailer

Looks cool. I'm actually looking forward to this film. I usually don't pay attention to stuff until it's out, but I've liked the majority of Nolan's previous work so I'm excited. It's always disappointing to see trailers to existing film scores, though. I remember hearing Lord of the Rings music...

    Making a Film Alone

I've done a few projects almost entirely by myself. They're nowhere near "decent" quality, but the point is that it's possible to film by yourself, especially if you're a beginner like me. If there's no other options it does provide some experience. Maybe an easier option for lone filmmaking...
