    New portable HD camcorder

For low light results like this: https://vimeo.com/114394701 I recommend the $299 Olympus 25mm f1.8 For nice telephoto results like this: https://youtu.be/DVrsElTLUOU I recommend the $99 (on sale) Olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 The Olys are terrific lenses. They're not stabilized, but as a...

    Best cheap video 4/3 lenses?

If you want a good value-for-money fast micro 4/3 prime you might want to consider the $299 Olympus 25mm f1.8. This lens will give you better low light performance than the kit lens - and will give you fast autofocus when you need it. If you want something wider, prefer manual focus and/or...

    New portable HD camcorder

You're not being a pain. The hardest part of buying a new camera is figuring out what to buy so you can actually shoot with it :) After I bought the camera, I spent a few dollars and added a $26.59 pistol grip, a $152 LCD viewfinder and a $9.83 cold shoe to make the camera a lot easier to use...

    New portable HD camcorder

If you want "motion picture quality video for pick up shots", you might want to consider the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera ($995 new, $870.62 used). This camera has been used on several big budget features. Cinematographer Ben Davis used it extensively on Avengers: Age of Ultron. DP...

    Need lens help (D5200 camera)

I recommend you sell the D5200 and buy a GH3. You won't have to switch in and out of live view to change your aperture - plus, you'll get a headphone jack. A much better camera for filmmaking. Good luck! Bill

    Upgrading from a T2i

Hi MirMan10 - sorry about your loss. That's a tough way to lose a camera! In Canada, it's going to be a challenge to find even a used GH3 for less than $900CDN. Instead, you might want to consider this $874.99CDN Panasonic G7 with the 14-42mm kit lens, on sale until August 5th at quickndone...

    pros/cons of fixed-lens cameras

There are a couple of Panasonic fixed lens cameras with sensors larger than 1" - the DMC-LX100 and the AG-DVX200. But the LX100 lacks a mic jack - and the DVX200 is overpriced for a camera that doesn't record to RAW and lacks a fixed aperture lens. If you want the 4K and slow mo features of...

The Surprisingly Appealing Panasonic FZ300 which just got announced

Jax In fact, Sony is almost a year late to market with the RX100 IV. The $798/£594/$884AUD 4K Panasonic DMC-LX100 pocket camera was released in September of last year. Yes, the LX100 is slightly larger than the Sony, but it should still fit in your jeans, if they're not too tight ;) It also...

    selling 6D for A7Rii funds

If you're going to wait, you might want to consider renting the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4K for $162 (plus shipping) over a weekend when it comes out to see if it meets your needs. Getting the camera up on your shoulder will help you get rid of the microjitters - without IBIS. Good luck! Bill

What camera I should buy? 7D Mark II?

If your principal interest is video, you should avoid Canon DSLRs in this price range. They lack: - 4096x2160p 4K or even 3840x2160p Ultra High Definition (UHD) resolution (you can get UHD resolution from entry level cameras these days - Canon DSLRs below the $7999 1D C are all limited to...

Canon 5D mk II vs Blackmagic Cinema

Congrats on the new camera! Glad you're liking it. I have been very impressed by the images from my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and I'm really looking forward to getting the URSA Mini. Happy shooting!

new of the new -- getting the most on a new cam

I rented the LS300 a few weeks ago - it is great for the web and maybe for TV - but the 8-bit codec wouldn't stand up to much grading, in my view. And I had a challenge removing one of my adapters from its MFT mount. I wouldn't have thought much of it, except that Philip Johnston (the "HD...

Advice needed - What equipment should I keep?

This pretty much crosses the A7s and 5D Mark III off your list. Sadly, the only way to solve this problem is with a camcorder or a Panasonic GH camera. The fast, reliable autofocus requirement crosses every DSLR off your list except the dual pixel Canon 70D and 7D Mark II (but they are...

    Canon 70D a good choice?

I think you're confusing the GH4 with the A7s. This is true for the A7s, but not the GH4. As jax says, the GH4 does record 8-bit 4:2:0 4K internally. Pretty sure Bold (the OP) has already taken delivery of the GH4, so this is moot. That said, I thought seriously about selling my GH4 and...

holly crud 4k for under 5K

    - You don't have to buy Blackmagic's shoulder mount or EVF (any rig and SDI EVF will do). - I don't need stellar low light performance. - As you say, CF 2.0 card prices are coming down. I am going to sell all of my 1080p cameras and buy the plain vanilla URSA Mini for $2995 and rig it up...

    Next Lens?

I have the GH3 and the GH4 and I've shot with the 12-35. I recommend the Metabones/EF lens option for video, but not for stills due to slow autofocus speed. If you're going to be paid for shooting stills at that wedding, the $969 35-100 is going to be your best bet. Hope this is helpful and...

holly crud 4k for under 5K

More likely December 2015. I saw the first generation URSA at last year's NAB and it was shipping by September and available on Amazon by October.

holly crud 4k for under 5K

I plan to buy a 4K Mini EF, put it on my $100 DIY rails and buy a $600 SDI EVF. Maybe a new or used Cineroid EVF4CSS. There is absolutely no way I'm spending $1500 for a viewfinder on a $3000 camera.

    YOUR Favorite Camera?

As far as I can tell, they're still £3417 in the UK. For that price, you can buy a round trip plane ticket to the States and get one for less money. After last week's massive price drop, they are $2999 brand new from Adorama in NYC.
