    Establishing an LLC in NYC

Do I need a lawyer to create an LLC in NYC or can I file the paperwork and do it myself? Anyone here have an LLC in NYC? Would like some insight into the process. Thanks, in advance, for your response.

    Police Car Rental

Hmm... a model won't do if the script actually calls for a cop driving the car, or cops getting in and out of it, or throwing handcuffed perps into the back seat. My advice is to inquire at the localities near you to see if there is a film unit of a police department which rents out cars. An...

    Producer?

I agree with the above posts. Just wondering... if you two are in different states, how you going to borrow his equipment?

    Hello and some questions

Gawd, how I hate how often El Mariachi gets referenced as an example of how to make a movie on the cheap. I mean, first of all, that was 17 years ago. Although digital filmmaking is very budget-friendly, inflation and the present economy affects lots of other things. Furthermore, wasn't it...

    Demo Reel

If the grant is asking to see a "director's demo," I'd focus on including clips you've directed. If you think your best work is as cinematographer, maybe include a short clip or two of that near the end, but I have a feeling you want to keep the demo more focused on one area of your expertise...

Glad it worked out! Just curious -- what kind of business is it? Did you shoot already? If not yet, make sure you get at least 60 secs of room tone when you do.

permission using somebody's house or a public place at night?

I would say you should find out what fog machines are available to you and how much they cost to rent. Can't you get some suggestions from your professors? See if you can borrow any from the film department or a local theater company. But don't count on having the fog machine for your shoot...

Is there a church in your community? Every church has an office. Do you have a community college or university nearby? Gas stations can have offices, small businesses such as realtors, insurance brokers, even retailers and hair salons could have an office in the back of their shops you can...

    Swag for a signing event

How many people are you expecting at this event? Rather, how many swag bags are you putting together? Knowing that would help with suggestions. Business cards, postcards, etc., are a must. Personally, however, I always wind up tossing most of the other cheesy stamped logo stuff I get as...

Another 48-HR, with an opinion question...

I worked on one and our team had about 23 people. Out of that, there were about 6 or 7 actors, so the rest were crew and we needed every single one of them! We had: 1 Director (who co-produced with the lead actor) 2 Writers (though we all contributed) 4 Associate Producers (I was one; we all...

No-budget short documentary: Releases for crowd attending a concert.

It's called a Crowd Release form. You should post one or two of them at the entrance into the club, and/or the room if there's a specific one within the venue where the event takes place. I shoot performances in clubs quite a bit, events in auditoriums, etc., and the managers have never...

Ever superstitious on your film project?

Perhaps a silly question, but just wondering... When you number scenes in your script for breaking it down, etc., do you use #13 or skip it and go right from 12 to 14? And pondering this question made me wonder if any of you indie filmmakers have any other superstitions during pre-, pro, or...

    Ultra Low Budget-sag

You really should visit sagindie.com for the full scoop. Meantime, I have a copy of SAG's film contracts digest, from a little info session I attended with SAG reps. Here is a summary of how the Ultra Low Budget Agreement works (some info is from my notes on the session): Total budget <$200k...

The interesting matter of recognizable objects and liability

You can get free legal advice on the forums over at The Law. They have numerous discussion boards, including ones for entertainment law and copyright, where you can ask your question. Be forewarned, however, that they sometimes do take their sweet time to answer. Basically, if there's a...

    Got a question here...

You should really only worry about what the name will be for your business and what kind of legal entity it will be. Then just research if that name is available to use in your state. There can be a bunch of different companies all over the place with the same name as yours, but your main...
