    Question about Contracts

This is confusing. Your church had a concert. Some young people wrote songs for the concert. You know someone who writes songs. You want a contract for a prodco - HUH? And you want to bring in clients . . . where? To whom? Clients ... for... you or the church? Didn't the church use...

Pay/no pay and asking for help

Oh, wow! I just found a workshop I want to take in making dance films, being given in NYC for three sessions, starting in October. It's being taught by the Dance Films Association. Looked really interesting.

    Paying actors

Ahh, thank you, directorik. You always make everything so clear.

    Paying actors

When paying actors (non-union) a day rate that often comes out to less than minimum wage, can they be paid as per-diem contractors (1099) or must they be employees (with payroll taxes, Unemployment insurance, etc.)? Please no guesses here - would like answers from producers with experience in...

Pay/no pay and asking for help

Well, yes, I would never consider asking someone without having a script and showing it to them. And I would never even start this process without having rewritten the script to get it to the point of being really, really good and worth all the effort. BTW, I have an update: A now have a DP...

Hi! Will send you a message privately - tomorrow. About to hit the hay when I saw your post.

    How do YOU direct actors?

Just because I disagree doesn't mean I don't understand you. Yes, film acting is different than stage acting. Of course, it is. Very different. That fact does not necessarily preclude the need for rehearsals in preparation for a film role. Nor does it mean that all film actors feel stifled...

    Finding a good acting teacher

Ask other actors, and audit classes (if allowed) before deciding. One teacher you might want to check out is Carole D'Andrea (she's good).

    How do YOU direct actors?

Actors don't get burnt out from rehearsals - they get burnt out from trying to guess what a director wants. Every actor, though they may not need it, ALWAYS appreciates having the chance to rehearse as much as possible. I cannot even fathom how being prepared (via rehearsals) would stifle an...

Getting my screen play off the ground

If you want just to sell your screenplay, you should know that it is pretty impossible for a first-timer to sell a script without an agent, and also that no one ever sells a first draft. What you should do next is "workshop" it and let other writers read it and give you feedback on what works...

Pay/no pay and asking for help

Yes, I understand that have release forms at the ready. Paperwork is not an issue here. My dilemma is figuring out how to word my request to someone for their services. How do you get talented people to commit for no pay?

Pay/no pay and asking for help

I-9's and W-9's - so you're saying they have to be employees? I know independent contractors don't need to submit I-9's. From IRS's website, they say "The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if you, the person for whom the services are performed, have the right to...

    Yeah, good luck with that.

Pay/no pay and asking for help

Well, it's different this way: To get actors, "no pay" will be in the casting notice, so you know right away that whoever responds is willing to work for credit, meals, and a DVD, and not hoping to get paid money. It basically weeds them out from the start. To get crew, I don't want to rely...

Pay/no pay and asking for help

I haven't established my LLC yet, but will soon. So my production co. will be a business, but I'd rather pay people as contractors and not employees. Yes, of course, I plan to cover expenses - there just won't be a lump o'cash going to them as payment! And I'm in the planning/pre-pro stage...

    getting hit with a shovel..

Yeah, not sure where you'd find suppliers in Melbourne (I imagine you know which search engines or web portals to use to find local stuff), but you could see if any prop suppliers have a rubber shovel like this: http://austinprops.com/shop/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=138

Pay/no pay and asking for help

Hi and thanks for your response. I realize when I edited my first post, I cut out an important part -- so now it's not clear. I'm NOT worried about my casting notices and unpaid actors - done that before (which is what I wrote). What is bothering me is asking people to work on my CREW for...

Pay/no pay and asking for help

Hello all, Having a little personal dilemma lately, in two parts... Here's Part I: I need to ask some people to work on a video project for me for free. I know this is routine, and I've done it too, but that was when I did mostly everything and just needed a few hands to help. I have no...

editing Can anyone tell what happened here?

Drummer should stick to drumming! The audio has drifted out of sync. Seems like something happened that is only obvious in the outputted file, which could be related to his audio card (just a guess). I use Avid, so I don't know what could happen with FCP. Were you originally supposed to...

    getting hit with a shovel..

Not so hard, really. Long lens, safe distance, one actor in foreground, good cueing (for actress to know when to react), add slow-mo & sound FX in post. And maybe have a prop shovel that's made of something a little softer, just in case.
