Are PCs really that bad for movie making?

The sync issues I come across are when exporting H264/MP4 through the Quicktime codec - playback is fine. As far as ProRes goes, you can download the codec separately from apple - you don't need CS5 to use it (I use it with Vegas).

Are PCs really that bad for movie making?

My only issue with using a PC is (ironically) Apple software - with so many editors using Macs, Quicktime (ProRes and H264) has kind of become the defacto standard for editing and distribution. The PC's out-of-the-box codecs are CRAP and Quicktime is just bad on the PC. I've had major issues...

Camera advice anyone? please lemme know

Don't dismiss the 7D - if the NEX VG10 hadn't have come along I'd have probably shot Arkham on a 7D (or even a T2i/Rebel) - yes, some people don't get along with the DSLR form-factor for shooting video but seriously - the results speak for themselves...

editing Issues With Particle Illusion & Sony Vegas Pro

Damn straight! I might just buy a copy of PI with service like that :) Re: Vegas - are you running 32-bit or 64-bit? 32-bit Vegas is a b*tch for running out of memory - it's not even PAE-aware - just generally sucks. 64-bit is a lot more stable.

what video games could make great movies?

I just saw this thread and had to comment - I had a really cool idea about making a Ridge Racer movie :D The two others I'd love to make are Rescue on Fractalus! and The Chaos Engine :)

editing 25 FPS Vs. 30 FPS

Agreed - I've worked on a lot of digital FX and none of them were ever fixed by changing the frame rate - if the effect isn't working it's because it's not properly integrated - i.e. doesn't match the camera settings (Field of View, aperture etc.) or the scene lighting.

    Who's got a feature film?

What's the name of your feature? H.P. Lovecraft's Arkham Sanitarium What's the logline and Synopsis of your feature? "Some places are built evil" Arkham Sanitarium is an anthology of three short stories faithfully adapted from the works of H.P. Lovecraft – each of the three stories is set in...

    Questions about purchasing follow focus.....

I used a D-Focus follow-focus ($139) on Arkham Sanitarium - seemed to work fine for most of the shots - the only one I had problems with was trying to use a Glidetrack and the D-Focus at the same time and keeping the dolly smooth and the shot in focus on a tiny monitor :D Next time I'll use a...

Camera advice anyone? please lemme know

Firstly, thanks for the praise :) I set out to make the Lovecraft movie I'd always wanted to see and whilst compromises had to be made I'm pretty happy with it :) As to the look, I knew I wanted something as cinematic as possible so that meant interchangeable lenses. We used 3 - a 50mm f1.4 -...

any tips for creating creepy lighting to a dark scene?

Don't forget a smoke machine! You can pick them up pretty cheaply (get a water-based DJ-type one) - even a little smoke adds a lot of atmosphere :) I used an LED light for my film - it was indispensable - used it for even lighting on greenscreen, lightning effects, sunlight through windows - it...

1st AD Blues: The After-Lunch Slowdown...

On the first day of shooting for Arkham we left lunch too late and had to stop shooting because of rumbling stomaches being pickup up on the audio :D

This is precisely why it's a good idea to test out workflows.

Nearly had a heart attack the first day of shooting for my film - we were recording to an Atomos Ninja and when I checked the footage, compared to the camera's native AVCHD, the Ninja ProRes looked noisy. It was only after running a number of tests I realised the Ninja was bypassing the camera's...

Camera advice anyone? please lemme know

I had a lot of fun working with the Sony NEX VG10 camcorder on Arkham Sanitarium - great picture, interchangable lenses, amazing DoF and really good low-light (shot some scenes just with candle light). I believe the VG20's out now which improves on the 10 a great deal (and means you might be...

Sanitarium and Padded Cell set for hire in London, UK

Now that we've wrapped on Arkham Sanitarium, we were planning to dismantle the sets we built - however, there's been some interest from low-budget shooters in using these sets so I thought I'd put this out to the IndieTalk UK community. We have a 6m long by 2m wide by 2.4m high tiled sanitarium...
