    Selfless Selfishness

Haha! :) It's not pity. Honest, thoughtful introspection is a rare commodity - it's even rarer that people have the courage and conviction to share what they truly believe since doing so makes you vulnerable to ridicule and criticism. I felt compelled to respond because what you've written...

    Selfless Selfishness

I feel I oughta reply to this since you've obviously spent a lot of time thinking about it but the best I can come up with is: Meh. People are assholes.

24-105mm Canon L lens, darker when zooming in?

Yeah, I use it with a Blackmagic Pocket with the Pocket Speedbooster - really awesome combo - I have a dumb m4/3 to Nikon adapter too so that one lens gives me a 28-105mm equivalent at a minimum of f/1.8 - very cool.

    Movie plot holes. anyone?

The Ring has a videotape (a videotape ffs!) that curses people that watch it. Despite having one of the dumbest premises in horror movie history it's actually a really creepy, disturbing film. I try not to analyse the stuff I watch too deeply because hey - it's all fantasy. But in my own...

cinematography How knowledgeable should directors be in cinematography?

At the least you should be able to visualise the film in your head as a complete movie and yes, that means composition, camera moves, lighting, props, set design, costumes, FX and how it'll all cut together. The people you work with take their cues from you - they're waiting to do whatever you...

What is your philosophy on aspect ratios?

The wider the better. I love the look of 2.39:1 whether truly anamorphic or not - it screams 'CINEMA!' - all the same, I crop to whatever the picture needs - my current feature being 1.85:1 P.S. Not a fan of mixed aspect ratios in films - it spoils the immersion for me - I pick a ratio and...

    the digital "wobble"

And don't film moving trains :) basically, anything that moves faster than the sensor refresh will cause jello.

24-105mm Canon L lens, darker when zooming in?

The Sigma ART 18-35mm (stunning lens btw) is a fixed f/1.8 - can't sing the praises of this lens highly enough - particularly when coupled with a Metabones Speedbooster (f/1.0!!!)

editing Best rendering quality on vegas movie studios?

Alexis Van Hurkman's book is pretty much required reading for the new colourist but if you're looking for something a little more immediate and easy to follow, I recommend Lynda.com's Resolve 11 Essential Training. They're both Resolve-centric but the skills you'll learn are relevant to...

Anyone have his vegas 12 problem?

Check your keyframes (pop out the keyframe strip from under your video) - if you crop part-way through a shot it'll animate the crop.

Magic Bullet crashing Vegas Pro 9

It's twitchy but you can get the job done if you don't push it too hard - I'm tinkering with the grading for my feature in Vegas 10 x32/MBL and so long as I'm not loading up 30mins+ of footage in one go it works... just :D Safest way might be to render out individual scenes in Sony 10-bit YUV...

Magic Bullet crashing Vegas Pro 9

Is this the old 32-bit version of MB? The current release only supports Vegas Pro 11+ And if it *is* the old one, yeah - it was pretty unstable (I use it from time-to-time with Vegas 10). Two bits of advice: 1) Split your edit into individual scenes for MB and do your grading *absolutely...

    editing Voluntary CGI Artists?

Then I'll give you a tip passed down to me from Ron Thornton: always have the camera banking slowly in space shots - it can be almost imperceptible but it makes us feel like we're in zero-gravity ;)

    editing Voluntary CGI Artists?

Whilst I admire your pluck and tip my hat to anyone that takes the time to learn new skills in pursuit of telling their stories, you've still got an awful lot to learn about CG - which I'm sure you will in time ;)

    editing Voluntary CGI Artists?

Your problem is that 'good' CGI skills (like any skilled profession) take time, practice and study to develop and skilled professionals expect to get paid (and if they're good, they get paid well). If you can't afford to pay people to work on your film then the best advice I can give you is to...

    Vacuum forming

Can't recommend anyone close to you but I *do* recommend using vac-form for stuff that otherwise would be hard to do - used these guys in the UK a lot on my film for interiors - just be prepared to do a *lot* of painting ;) You'd be amazed at the stuff they can do - it's relatively cheap too.
