What We Do In The Shadows

Not quite sure what you're question is Richy. Distribution means that it gets shown in cinemas across the nation, yes. Though I do find it amusing that you find the DVD-cinema thing backwards. By the time most movies come to cinemas here, the DVD has been out for months! But I guess we're a...

What We Do In The Shadows

Well it's been released in Asia, Australia, the UK (I think) as well as lots of European countries. Plus they have self distributed into a number of US cinemas, but those are only small/short runs in those cinemas. They were also on the front page of Rotten Tomatoes a while back. Does...

What We Do In The Shadows

I'm not sure how they're doing their digital distribution, but there are obviously costs involved. Still, you're right it does seem like the sort of thing that'd have lower production costs.

What We Do In The Shadows

Yeah gave em a tenner. I'd already seen the film in theatres and bought the DVD as a present for someone when it came out here. As SC said, the rewards are a bit overpriced. I would probably have given more if they had better rewards (I don't even care about my $10 reward, it was just to...

What We Do In The Shadows

Admittedly I agree that the kickstarter rewards are a little overpriced (but all crowd funding rewards are, as to actually make decent profit from them). But I'm not surprised they can't find distribution in the US, given the number of great films that do well in overseas markets yet never find...

What We Do In The Shadows

What We Do In The Shadows is a mockumentary about Vampires that came out last year by New Zealand filmmakers Taika Waititi ("Two Cars, One Night", "Boy," currently writing "Moana" for Disney) and Jemaine Clement ("Eagle Vs Shark", one half and writer of "Flight of the Conchords"). Without doing...

    archived-videos New VFX reel

Personally I'd prefer breakdowns (or a seperate video with breakdowns) as in quite a few examples I'm unsure what work is yours/how much is achieved in-camera and how much of the vfx you did (i.e. if you were a one man band, or part of a team).

Writers using flashy words for the sake of it?

I wouldn't call it being a know it all cocky douchebag, rather evoking the intended tone. It's a bit over the top for my tastes, but it evokes a much stronger image when you read it than "Collins' drives his car." That inspires more creativity and excitement from the people using the the script.

How can I make archive footage look good?

You could "creatively" get away with it - e.g. have the fact it's cell phone footage be part of the script. So you could have a scene with a news presentor talking about the protest, then have s/he say something like "a few of our viewers sent in their own footage of the scenes on 43rd" [que...

How much freedom to give an Actor

Its not about feelings, it's about avoiding "mimicking." Mimicking is not acting and its superficial. If an actor is just memorising and repeating actions and words, they wont necessarily understand their character fully. Using techniques like this will only ever result in passable...

My distribution plan for a $50k USD profit.

Would you consider keeping a blog or vlog to document the process? I'd certainly be interested in knowing what you're up to in more depth, as I'm sure others would. Although I understand if you're keeping cagey on the details for a reason.

    I believe in 48 FPS

Personal experience - I work in a Dolby Atmos theatre (there are no others in the country, and for a while we were the only atmos theatre in Australia and NZ - I think Aus has some now). We certainly advertise our movies as the only place to see 'x movie' in atmos. I get asked semi-frequently...

    I believe in 48 FPS

Arguments that one looks better than the other are absurd. 48fps is distracting because it's not what people are used to, not because it's better or worse. (Well maybe it is, but I'm unsure how one would measure that). But vinyl is better than digital in music :p The argument that 48fps isn't...

who pays for more expensive indies to get made?

In Your Eyes was also written by Joss Whedon... so that might have something to do with it getting funding.

amateur in everything in real life seeking help.

As Walter said, research other great (evil) dictators. Understand the conditions in which Hitler rose etc. If you want a ficitonal example, the final season of the Legend of Korra (a teen show by all means, but one well written enough to be enjoyed by adults) deals with a similar concept to...

    Childhood actor syndrome

Kind of unfair, given that these people are pushed into this lifestyle as children. Often starting before they even hit their teens, kids hardly have the capacity to fully understand what they're getting themselves in for. Parents want to profit off their kids. Kids think it'll be cool and fun...

How can I write this scene so it does not come off as forced?

Give the detective more evidence to build his "hunch" from. It does seem unlikely that the police would act on one person's hunch (is that even legal?). Is the detective's hunch meant to be wrong? (i.e. the lawyer isn't involved in the crime) Then make him misheard something, read something...

    Is this scene too dark?

Oh, I thought you were referring to the therapy group part. Not sure why the whole raping a minor thing didn't register as the biggest red flag. Still, doesn't mean that it can't be successful. Lots of films, tv shows, novels, etc have unlikable and even evil protagonists. Fight Club, Death...
