Buying dinner after 2 hour shoot?

For my second short, we're going to start shooting on location tomorrow for two hours. The DP, sound tech, three actors are all working for free. Should I buy them dinner after a 2 hour shoot or is that more expected when you're shooting for the whole day? * If anything, it would be a...

Getting the talent to go to 'that place.'

I learned how unique each actor is when we held auditions recently. Some actors, interpreted the sides spot on..didn't ask questions and gave a bad-ass performance. Others got up their and were confused until i explained the premise and character to them and the scene's place in the...

    Need microphone help!

If I record audio separately, won't there be issues with sync afterwards...if I don't have an experienced sound pro to work on it? Or do you mean ADR?

    Need microphone help!

I'm currently shooting with a 5D Mark 2, in case that matters. But my questions is, if I'm shooting a dialogue scene from 5 - 10 feet away from the actors, and the two actors are right next to each other, can I use a shotgun mic thats mounted on my camera? Or do I need to hold an extended boom...

Who here works with a filmmaking partner?

I was a "lone wolf" on my first. My second, which starts shooting tomorrow, I have a pretty solid team. I think it helps a lot to have a few specialists. My DP has a solid reel and has no interest in being a director (which is rare among DPs). My sound guy is an up-and-comer who just loves...

    film-school Film School Advice?

While I do think that thesis films tend to be very pretentious and poorly made, the "final product" of film schools are film makers, not their thesis films.

    film-school Film School Advice?

I'm in the film school at San Francisco's Academy of Art right now and I can only speak about this school in particular. Film school will just give you the resources and expertise of experienced people to help you work on your projects. It's not as theory based as it used to be. You have to...

How do you value full-on DSLR feature films?

These replies have made an interesting read. I start on my second short this Friday and we're using a 5D Mark 2.

Anyone feel some movies have way too much cursing in?

I think in a certain context it makes sense. I know people that use a curse word in every other sentence. I have a professor who says shit at least 30 times in a lecture and he's the PHD academic type. I think it kind of works in The Departed but in The Big Lebowski, which is one of my fav...

    OpenIndie DIY distribution

Lol, I'll ask the site admin if I can access their back-end and install Google analytics and track it for a month and get back to you. My point was that their is a smaller pool with that site, compared to other major sites. Even if they are off by 5,000%, after conversions from page-to-page...

    Short screenplay available - free

I got a director friend who's looking for some ideas to produce but I'm too greedy to give him any of mine. If he makes it, he'll be submitting it to a bunch of Cali film festivals. You can email it to me at ZainRizzo@gmail.com if you'd like.

If you could shoot in any place in the world?

If you could shoot a story in any place in the world, as far as aesthetics go, where would you shoot and for what type of story? Mine would be, for an epic film, Agra Fort, India.

Anyone else hate when they do this in thrillers?

It's lazy writing. There are other ways to put your protagonist in a rough situation and not force him to kill and, as a result, make him harder to sympathize with. SPOILER::::: In The Next Three Days, for example, Russell Crowe needs money for his wife and is outside of a bank with a gun...

    Film Internships during undergrad?

There are a few private schools in LA where a few of my friends go that guarantee internships, but they are both film focused schools. The New York Film Academy is on the Universal Studios lot and Columbia College is a few miles outside of Studio City.
