editing Cut to blacks and a TV issue?

It's probably some sort of energy saving and/or backlight preservation thing - designed to shut off the backlight is the signal does. Odd that it doesn't have a delay or something so that it doesn't do it when a video fades to black. The other possibility is that it's just there to make the tv...

    Do lens converters degrade quality?

A "total disaster" is being a bit dramatic. The thing is that when you're talking about still photography lenses they are built to work at much higher resolutions than you typically work with for video. 1080p is only 2 megapixels, 4k is around 8. DSLR lenses are typically designed for shooting...

2000-3000 budget film camera (advise needed)

Worth noting that while the A7s does have a full frame sensor it also has an APS-c crop mode which will be much closer to the standard S35 frame size. This mode has the added benefit of greatly reduced rolling shutter, and results in cleaner slow motion when shooting at 60fps than the full frame...

    help, film-life crisis.

I'd also add I'd be surprised if Michelangelo didn't look up every time he walked into the Sistine Chapel and see mostly the flaws - flaws that nobody else is even aware of. That's the nature of any artistic endeavor - it's perfect in your head, but it'll never be perfect in the real world. You...

    Let's Help A Fellow Filmmaker

Finally watched it - well shot and reasonably impressive considering the budget. From a story & sci-fi standpoint I thought it was a disappointment though. It's pretty much a collection of sci-fi cliches, with story beats that follow the standard pattern for this type of film. As an action...

    film-school Full Sail Film School

Totally missed that this was such an old thread. Doesn't really change my reaction though - the higher tuition makes even less sense now with the current economy. If job opportunities and salaries aren't increasing to match the cost of education it seems hard to justify taking on that kind of...

    film-school Full Sail Film School

Even more, based on their tuition page it looks like it would run $75k for a bachelors & $31k for a masters: http://www.fullsail.edu/admissions/campus-tuition And that doesn't include any living costs, so over 2 years you're looking at $100k+. I've got to say that seems absolutely insane to...

editing Cut to blacks and a TV issue?

You can try lower values as well, you'll just have to test to see where it triggers the backlight to drop out - it may only happen at absolute zero. Try 1,1,1 and then move up from there if it doesn't work.

editing Cut to blacks and a TV issue?

Have you tried playing something else - a DVD or Blu-ray, for instance - to see if the TV does it with that? I'm guessing the TV may automatically do it (regardless of the settings) so that you don't seem backlight bleed when the screen is dark. Also - when you tried the black solid, is it...

editing Cut to blacks and a TV issue?

My guess is that the TV has a 'dynamic contrast' feature that is enabled - it adjusts the brightness of the backlighting on the fly so that shadows in dark scenes will be darker while bright scenes are brighter. When you hit a full screen of absolutely pure black it's probably turning the...

The Chair - show about two first-time feature directors

Only watched the first episode so far, definitely should be interesting to see how it plays out. I found the guy to be pretty annoying, although it could just be his hair. I do think it's interesting that they've sort of pitted a more traditional film industry person against a new media success...

    You really want it?

Trust me, not freaking out. And I am reading what you said. In the beginning of the thread you said you were teaching yourself to write. Later, you say you are offering people an opportunity to learn by working with a professionally written script. If, as you said earlier, you are not in...

So you are a professional screenwriter?

    You really want it?

I'm really using profit as a proxy, in the case of a film like Glengarry Glen Ross, for audience interest. I'm saying if a film like that with A-list everything can't generate enough audience interest to recoup it's modest (by hollywood standards) budget it suggests there may not be a very large...

How does writing a horror script, save on budget exactly?

I've never heard that horror is better for making a low budget film because it would actually lower the budget; usually it seems to be done because there is (was) a market for low budget horror so it was more likely that you could sell the film and actually make some money from it. It's...

    Movie Theater economics

That's what I figured - it makes it hard though to develop a strategy for promotion if you don't even know what your targets are for success (beyond, of course, 'as many tickets as possible'). Too bad about the local press though, that's the primary avenue I could see to promote something local...

    Is "mise-en-scène" bullshit?

I don't see it. There are many perspective you can discuss and analyze a film from. One might be to look at the various elements in isolation, another might be to look at the whole of the production as a single unified work. You might explore just the use of sound, or the way music is used. And...

editing Can a movie's levels be downsized when it comes to DVD?

Well, I'm not really sure what specifically that option is referring to. There are several different areas where bit-depth comes into play, so without knowing what that control is for in premier's export process I can't give you a recommendation.

    Movie Theater economics

Were you able to get any 'free' promotion - things like write ups in the local weeklies, etc? I wonder if it would be possible on a local scale like that to generate enough interest to keep it in the theater longer without spending more than it's worth. I guess the key to that question is what...
