How is this done? John Doe shoots someone, blood apears.

They really shot them. Talking about taking one for the team! Between that and the arc lights, man those guys were hardcore back then.

Great thread but something being left out of it: Covers! DON'T SCREW IT UP Make it the right color, two brads, NO VISIBLE WGA #, NO ARTWORK. Anything else?

    Starting out as a producer?

A realistic turnaround depends on what you're like to work with, not just how hard you work. You could fall into the right production company on the first bounce or it could take a year but I guarantee if you work on 10 pictures in that year you will have a zillion connections, and if you work...

This is what I want to do...

Sorry, I didn't see this before. Its done with color correction, and is very easy to do. Here's how its done in FCP but its the same pretty much for all NLE's. http://www.lafcpug.org/tutorials/basic_pleasantville_look.html

sound Copyrighted Music In A Film Festival.

Not sure why I never saw this earlier but just to set the record straight, it is never OK to use, play, broadcast, give away or sell copyrighted music ever, for any reason, without written permission for that purpose. 1. Its not fair to filmmakers who have "legal" original music 2. Its not...

"Ellie Parker" ... even cheap DV can make it

I hear and agree what you are saying Rik, but the question then follows, "what made him put it down"? When creating a realistic Mise-en-Scen, we cannot remove the audience from what they have come to expect from cinema - ie. high production values, which is exactly the opposite of what cheap DV...

    There Will Be Blood

Its been a few days since I saw it and I'm still digesting it. Its really impossible to love the film because its not an easy film to watch but I appreciate it on every level. Not perfect though.

    Fake whiskey bottle ? (source?)

Soak the bottle in water for some hours, scrape off the label, buy some sticker stock (Avery makes some) and inkjet print on it. I do it all the time, for props and other reasons.

Maya/Combustion or Lightwave, AE, VisionLab? Any other ideas

They're all good and much like NLE's they all do different things better/worse than the others. The question is, what in particular do you want to be able to do?

Should I dump (sell on ebay) my Canon XH-A1 (1440x1080i) ?

I'm struggling to find out what you want to know? Its like asking, can I make an acceptable movie on a GL2 or a DVX100? The answer is, yes, it has been done, and it has a lot less to do with the camera than the lighting, angles, acting, etc. not to mention the prowess of the operator of the...

Should I dump (sell on ebay) my Canon XH-A1 (1440x1080i) ?

My HV20 records 1920x1080p24p . I wouldn't get too worked up about whether its 1440x1080 or 1920. The varicam has been making beautiful movies at 720p for a decade now, which is less res than 1440x1080 by far. More important than the extra res is good lighting, good angles, good direction...
