This forum is great for that. Youtube is also invaluable. Dozens of good audio tutorials on it.
This course and other DSLR and audio ones on lynda.com are excellent. I think you can join for a month for free but after that trial there is a monthly fee.

Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice. Get as much experience as you can prior.
The script is critical. Most movies fail because the scripts are weak.
Do lots of prep work, storyboard. Have the locations/sets checked out for visuals, sound issues etc. Take lots of test video and audio...

Yep, it's tough for PA's and interns.
Some get treated well, some terribly.

For film making, L.A. is a great place to be.
There is sooo much talent here be it acting side or crew side. Whatever you need. Ditto gear houses, prop houses, post prod houses. Everything...
But is L.A. a nice city to live in? Depends...
Just be careful. I have bought and sold on ebay and never had an issue.
But always buy from sellers with excellent reputations.
To save money, use an auction sniper tool (do a google on: ebay auction sniper) - never get caught in a bidding war as they are always costly.
Since you want to sell it, I would focus on the one you are most passionate about...
Saying that a well written low budget (?) horror would likely have a slightly better chance of selling that an action (expensive) screenplay.
