    filming shorts with friends

Well it depends how convincing actors your friends are. You may be lucky and have a friend who's brilliant or it could go the other way. It can go extremely badly, because you're working with frinds they won't nescecarily see you as a serious filmmaker. They'll see you as their friend, so they...

Are camera angels and terms necessary for spec scripts.

If a director is writing a screenplay that he intends to film himself. Is it still a thing you shouldn't do? I've just written a screenplay and I have included a few camera directions, because quite frankly they're vital to the story. eg. say someone was hanging upside down and you wanted them...

    District 9

The problem is that it's a lazy thing to use and it doesn't show much cinematic flair. With shaky cam you tend tend to get one long shot of the action. There's no clever cuts to make things flow well. It's a trend I'd like to see die soon. It doesn't make your film 'edgy' to have shots going all...

    Free Stock Footage?

Internet Archive is a great site. If you're into old movies you can download loads of classics for free because of expired copyright. I hadn't noticed that collection.

    Newbie camera question...

Yes most indie films at the moment are probably still produced on DVD. Blu ray is becomming more available. I could have included a blu ray re-writer drive when I had my new PC built, but I decided against it. They still cost a bit and the price will drop. I think blu ray discs are still a bit...

    archived-videos New Short, Unfinished Crisis.

I didn't like how you kept jumping from B&W to colour. It didn't work. The guy didn't choose a very secluded place to bury the body, saw a car drive past in the background. The bag looked a bit too limp to contain a body, in places. The acting could have been better. The bit where the guy runs...

    Should I go to HD?

It wouldn't hurt to get to grips with HD. It will become more and more relevant. The only problem would be to do with your set up. You can find HD difficult to work with on a basic computer. It's very demanding on the hardware.

How often do you use a green screen?

If you're just starting out it's worth just going down to a shop that sells sheets of cloth. Buy a large sheet of lime green material, it shouldn't be too expensive. Then if you have an editing program such as Sony Vegas you can key pretty easily. Don't buy an expensive set up until you're...

archived-videos STAY OUT OF THE WOODS - new Grindhouse Slasher

Look for exploitation movies on wikipedia. Thats the real name for the genre. Then there are loads of sub-genres comming from that. Grindhouse is the name for a certain type of theatre that showed exploitation films. They were very sleezy places, often ex-strip joints.

    Is THE END necessary

You could put it on the screenplay as a note but not include it in the actual movie. 'THE END' is a bit cliched and quite limmiting. When you say 'THE END' it closes off the story entirely. It discourages the audience from speculating about what could happen after the events of the film.

    Remaining Budget and filmmaker's right?

Keeping the $10,000 to me would seem wrong to me. The money was allocated for making a film, not to go into the pocket of the director. Either you should put the money to good use on the production of the film or give it back. If you're going to keep it, you should share it between people...

    Weapons

Thanks for all the help. I had heard of airsoft guns but I've not found many good suppliers, thanks for the links. @TheBuck: I may use a few blunt and sharp weapons as it's suposed to be very brutal film. But guns are a pretty big part of it. Anyway, it's more difficult for me to use sharp...

    Weapons

I'm thinking about creating a short film. It's basically a revenge story. I will need get a number of fake guns. But I'm in the UK, there are very strict gun laws so I have to be careful about what I do. Can anybody suggest how I could get some realistic looking guns to use in my movie? I...
