    Fiscal Sponsorship: Commercial vs. Non-Commercial????

There are a number of grants, gifts and other sources of funding. Look for businesses related to the content of your documentary. Ask if they'll help sponsor for a mention in the credits. If you're producing it locally, try going to local cumminty banks pitching the concept that it's a...

    Fiscal Sponsorship: Commercial vs. Non-Commercial????

A couple of points to consider - and I may have mentioned these in another thread but my memory isn't... um... ah... what was I saying? Oh right. In the U.S. the primary difference between a "for profit" and "non-profit" corporation is issuing stock. For-profit corporations issue stock (and...

    Best steadycam for mini-dv?

I made one of the $14 models myself, but the galvanized pipe is pretty heavy (and I have bad shoulders.) I think I'll try making one out of PVC. Hmmm...

    Ready for a fun weekend?

Good luck Will!! Pick up an extra 8-pack of 'monster' energy drink. It's just got to get you through 34 hours, right? Seriously though - best of luck. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

    I just auditioned...

Don't be too hard on yourself, Zen. Just because you think it was a bad audition, doesn't necessarily mean anyone else saw it that way.

the big hello and the little plan

Come now, let's not do things by half measures. If you want real accountability, particularly to an enthusiastic and ruthless group, I suggest you create an opt-in mailing list and send these writings daily. Yes, I'm mean and nasty... it's the years in management that's done it.

    lighting Lighting for Green Screening

I'd say the most important factor is to be mindful of shadows, they're problematic in keying. A strong light placed just above the screen, aimed down, will go a long way to prevent shadows falling on the screen. Use the softest possible lighting in the foreground.

Build your own projector for $300

This is so wrong... I'm just have to build one. The OHP chassis needs a little modification to make the cooling more efficient and house a motherboard, hard drive and DVD drive. Wireless keyboard and mouse... maybe a low power FM transmitter plugged into the sound card so I can use my existing...

New Indie Film Tech Tip: Green Screen Construction

Here are a couple of shots of the "studio" with the green screen in place. Note the two free-standing fluorescent lights. Those were used as fill lights to reduce shadows on the screen. The actor's perspective is a little daunting. It's not an easy task to act when you're looking at this...

New Indie Film Tech Tip: Green Screen Construction

I positioned the screen with a rafter about 1' in front of it. Two fluorescent lights hanging from the rafter gave it pretty even lighting. I also used two standing fluorescent lights on either side as fill lights. I actually filmed myself making the lights but can't stand the tedious...

New Indie Film Tech Tip: Green Screen Construction

Part 6: Conclusion Lighting To light your green screen, it's best to put a source as close as possible to the front surface - between your actors and the backdrop. That will help eliminate shadows which (trust me again) are a pain to remove later. If possible, use soft lighting when using a...

New Indie Film Tech Tip: Green Screen Construction

Part 5: Setting the Tension Congratulations, you're almost done! A flat level surface is critical in using a green screen. The slightest wrinkle will cast a shadow, making your life a lot more difficult. Trust me. (if you haven't figured it out yet, when I say 'trust me' is't because I've...
