    Appropriate focal length?

If you're going 35mm and can afford it, I highly recommend the Zeiss 35mm f1.4. Hell of a lens.

    Appropriate focal length?

12mm (24mm equivalent on a full-frame camera) definitely falls into the wide-angle category. An actual 24mm lens should be around the "normal" focal length for 1.9x sensors and will make a good compliment to your existing 12mm and 50mm lenses.

Personally, I think he peaked with "Schizopolis".

Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm DX Lens??

This question gets asked a lot. You should do some searches here to find existing threads.

How's my script? The Reigns: Year One - The Uprising

No, but I do send fragments to people who are curious. PM me your e-mail and I'll sling some stuff your way. I do have a short script I wrote that anyone is free to use (if I get a screenwriting credit), but I wrote it in a single sitting (and a quick revision the next day) so it's not the...

How's my script? The Reigns: Year One - The Uprising

Yep. My first stab at a script was horrible in a different way. After hammering away it it for months, suddenly something just clicked and all of a sudden I was able to write screenplays well. Night-and-day difference.

    Which lens is more professional?

If you're on a budget, start with a 24mm and a 50mm. If you find yourself shooting in small spaces, add an 18mm. The 135mm, while not absolutely crucial, will let you get interesting shots you just can't get with a 50mm. Aside from the very pretty and shallow DOF, remember that longer focal...

How's my script? The Reigns: Year One - The Uprising

I made it to page 30 and can't go on any further. This script is horrible in just about every way. The characters aren't really characters, they're juvenile cartoons. There's no story to speak of, nothing interesting happens, and the dialog is making my ears bleed. You need to sit down...

    Which lens is more professional?

Got it. First off, there is no such thing as "too sharp". If you want to lose image quality, do it in post. What you want is to capture the best image you can in-camera, as that gives you the best starting point for developing your final look. On to the Portlandia clips: A lot of the quality...

    Which lens is more professional?

If you're going with primes, you're definitely going to need more than one lens. I've never seen Portlandia, so could you describe the sort of look/feel that you're aiming for. That might help us help you with your initial lens selection. Be aware that when it comes to lenses, you get what you...

    Which lens is more professional?

I don't have any experience with nokton lenses, but I own a small collection of Canon L's and they're fantastic (with the exception of the 200mm f2.8 which I found rather underwhelming). If you can rent those lenses to try them out, that would be ideal -- you'll want to look at sharpness, color...

lighting LED lights with Canon t3i?

I'm curious about these as well, since I need bright, low-power lights that I can gel to incandescent temperatures. (The house I'll be shooting in has old wiring so I can't just get shoplights and be done with it.)

Canon 5D MkIII video lag issue

Yeah, I think 1/6th of second in lag is not going to go away and I'll just have to deal. It's not like a DSLR is a hardcore video camera, and I shouldn't expect it to behave like one.

Canon 5D MkIII video lag issue

I just shot a video with my iPhone of my MkIII in video mode aimed at the Movie Slate app. This has been an excellent demonstration of just how bad mental estimation is. The actual timed lag? 1/6th of a second. It feels like much longer, but in reality the camera's LCD is exactly 5 iPhone...

    Which Canon?

You might find 50mm a bit confining for various different shots. Look into getting a wide-angle in the neighborhood of 18mm as well. If you're not shooting in low-light conditions, the kit 18-55mm lens should work very well for you. (An 18mm prime would be better, but good ones are pricey.)

How's my script? The Reigns: Year One - The Uprising

Eegh. Page 3 and I don't know if I can continue reading. Primary issue #1: You describe 'what', not 'how'. Or rather, you write 'inner' instead of 'outer'. A screenplay describes what is seen on the screen. Page one has this massive list of character attributes, while you only dedicate a single...

    Does anyone use Shot Designer?

By itself I think it will be fairly useful, but it really shines when you combine it with their Hollywood Camera Work DVD course, which is brilliant. I firmly believe that every person here should save up the $300 and buy this course because it teaches you how to shoot fantastic-looking...

I keep forgetting YouTube even has ads. Thank you, AdBlock Plus! (Commercials are the reason I stopped watching TV over a decade ago.)

Canon 5D MkIII video lag issue

Nope. This is the bog-standard MkIII set to 1080p at 24fps. I first noticed it when running the video via HDMI to my spiffy new flatscreen and aiming the camera so the TV was in the shot. My friend and I noticed the lag as it propagated down through the repeated TVs in the image. Then I noticed...

cinematography Why does 24fps look choppy?

You could also try a slower shutter speed (like 1/30) and see if the extra motion blur helps cover the choppyness.
