WANTED Screenwriting feedback dead or... not

It's an interesting approach, but right now it's all setup with no payoff. Interesting setups are easy -- the real test will be if you can pull something interesting out of this opening you've written.

My first camera test with canon 5d mark III

Shoot with a flat color profile (Neutral, Technicolor Cinestyle, or Flaat), and read as many color grading tutorials as you can find.

    Screenwriting and location availability

Heck, I'm writing a screenplay around a single location and a single actor. If you want to actually finish a project, work with what you have. Sidenote: all of my other screenplays would require $60 million minimum to make, and because of this they'll most likely never exist anywhere but on paper.

    DSLR

Of course, the real cost is in the lenses... :P (Camera bodies come and go, but lenses are an investment.)

MAC vs PC for Indie Filmmaking (Dec 2012)

tomb378 speaks the truth. Y'all should listen.

MAC vs PC for Indie Filmmaking (Dec 2012)

The current Mac Pros can handle up to 96GB, I think, even though there's room for 128GB. (I run 64GB personally.) Important note: Apple RAM is silly-expensive. Do NOT purchase from them. Other World Computing offers compatible RAM for whatever model you might get, and they're much, much...

    sound Orchestra quality software?

I'm using Logic now with Native Instrument's Komplete 8 Ultimate -- this comes with a string instrument library that has 29 different ways of expressing a string (legato, sustain, glissando, etc...). It also automatically switches the bow direction, so they sound quite good. There are similar...

    the future of FPS

I think low-budget filmmakers will be staying with 24fps for awhile since higher frame rates require more storage and processing time. Has anyone here rendered photoreal CG before? Remember how long that took? Feel like rendering out twice the number of frames? Thought not. :)

MAC vs PC for Indie Filmmaking (Dec 2012)

I'll just poke my head in here and say: Yeah, Macs are more expensive, but I've noticed they have fantastic build quality. You get great components, well designed and nice to use. After 20 years in the PC world I've found I'm much happier with Macs and the reduced mental stress has been totally...

    Screenwriting program

I use Final Draft (purchased, not pirated -- there's a reason I took that well-paying software job), but really, any auto-formatting screenplay program will work when you're just starting out. I was shocked at how much better my screenwriting got when I could just focus on writing without...

The 3D effect was pretty flat. What did you shoot this with?

    DSRL Equipment

I've had bad luck with external monitors with the 5D MkII due to how it outputs its video stream, but you might have better luck on the T2i. Definitely try them out before buying.

cinematography Is this a decent lens?

I fully understand. I'm an overpaid software dev, so I can get the fancy stuff. Be aware, however, that the quality of your glass has the biggest impact on your imagery (from a technical perspective). I've never even heard of the 35-80. As for the 70-300 (if it's the one I'm thinking of), it's...

cinematography Is this a decent lens?

I dunno, that Canon f1.4 is a fantastic lens for the cost. I just replaced mine with a Zeiss, but that was mainly for the manual-focus quality rather than image quality. The Canon 50mm f1.4 image quality was pretty close to that of their L-series lenses. It's totally worth the $350.

cinematography Is this a decent lens?

It depends on how close the original lens was supposed to be to the film/sensor. Some directions work pretty well (eg. Nikon->Canon EOS), others have major focus and distortion issues (FD->EOS). I've been hearing good things about M42->Canon EOS, and horrible things about adapting FD lenses. I...

How many of you self-fund your first feature?

I'm self-funding my first feature by syphoning off a bit of my paycheck every month. It's been slow going, but I'm close to being able to start production. I'll be paying my actor a total of 10K, and have spent the last year slowly collecting the equipment I need. (It helps that the script is...

    Call for a 10 pager

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I've got a 19-pager that was written with a super-low budget in mind. I dashed it out in one night for a college student here but I never heard back from him. Anyone may try to make this script into a film, no strings attached (so long as I get a credit...

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

I was shocked at just how much it paled in comparison to the first one. I certainly expected more from a Moriarty story, too.
