cinematography Dialogues with a single camera are so frustrating

I don't know how good your actors are, but if they are then you could try what Lars von Trier did in almost all of his later films: instead of cutting from actor A to actor B you film the dialogue in one take and pan (more or less) rapidly between them. this might or might not work in your case...

how to keep my ideas original??

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows...

    cinematography vhs quality effect

i agree. you lose a lot of resolution by simply transfering the whole film to tape and back, so you might want to find a way to get that look digitally, without ending up with 350x480 pixels.

    Inception

i agree, though one of the more original things out of hollywood in the last years, it still is a rather conventional action movie, including psychological inaccuracy.

What music do you listen to?

I used to listen to these bands a lot a couple of years ago....hm maybe I'll make tomorrow an old school hc day. Recently, I found myself listening to a lot of post rock again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgDQN2qls9c <3

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

Criticising the "originality" of a film is almost always problematic. After all everyone is influenced by something, consciously or unconsciously, and today's productions still very often have the dramatic structure of the ancient greeks. Or, as Jim Jarmusch said: "Nothing is original. Steal...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

Sorry to bring this up again, but I have the feeling that you don't quite understand what I'm trying to say. speaking of subjective judgements... You focus too much on how much work or effort someone put into creating something, but pieces of art don't depend on that alone. "Art" is not a...

Shooting "Guerilla style" w/out getting sued?

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread, so sorry if I repeat what has already been pointed out. Though I have no experience with asking for courtrooms, I'd suggest you simply make a call and ask the first person on the phone what you'd have to do to be allowed to film there and who the...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I really appreciate that you chose to continue our discussion, as I find your objections very important. An important factor when talking about art is the intention of the artist. (That's what I meant when I talked about the "purpose" of art; art does not serve a purpose like, for example, a...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I won't go into every detail you said here, as discussing opinions is always a little delicate, but I have to point out that I did not intend to insult you in any way, if that's what I did, I'm sorry. What I did was to tell my opinion on this topic and why I have this opinion. I respect yours...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I never said it's an invalid form of film making, I simply said, and that's why I have to underline that this is MY point of view, that it is not the way I want it to be. As with all things there are numerous ways of doing it and no absolute truths. Of course we're dealing with vague terms here...

favorite Top 5 Favorite Directors Of All Time?

    1. Andreij Tarkowskij - (I hope people aren't annoyed that I mention him wherever I can :) ) He is my personal favourite. His style of making films is different from anything I had seen before, very subjective, very personal, autobiographical at times. I love his use of long shots, and of...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I mentioned in one of my posts before that the idea that a film can only be either entertaining or insightful (and thus boring) is a cliché. Even though, I have to admit that some directors of "insightful" films, especially Europeans tend to do that, often seem to feel urged to make the film as...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I never doubted that Cameron loves his job, after all he's been in the business for many years now so it's highly unlikely that he hates making movies. But what clash here, at least as far as I am concerned, are two "philosophies" of making films. Wanting to entertain is one of them. If...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I agree with you! my point was that I tend to believe that Avatar is not significantly worse than any other Hollywood film, that it has all the qualities and flaws of other financially successful movies (the qualities being the technical aspects), and that criticism should not end with but go...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

well that's the old cliché that a movie can only be either entertaining or insightful and thus boring, but it does not work that way. I can only speak of myself, but when a movie "makes me think" I am not bored by it. the purpose of art is in my opinion to "make people think", to make them...

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

I don't think criticizing Avatar, without criticizing the whole escapist, Hollywood, blockbuster, xyz-industry makes much sense. Avatar is a Hollywood film, if it hadn't been Avatar it had been another movie that introduced this new, though unnecessary, gimmick called 3D cinema/television...
