    Why so pessimist about distribution?

I see what you're saying, but gotta disagree. The difference is between a "story" and a "good story." Telling a good story is difficult and takes a lot of time and energy (perhaps away from your paying job or family), and getting it out to the masses (if that's what you want) takes resources...

    Why so pessimist about distribution?

@ItDonnedOnMe @rayw I think the "social object" has validity. But hasn't it been around for a very long time as something that prompts "word of mouth?" That excitement in the film's "something" (or whatever) is still what makes it worth relating and effects us humans as we have been for eons...

    Why so pessimist about distribution?

I agree-- but "what the film draws out of the audience" must be accomplished by the film, which keeps the process mostly filmmaker-centric, doesn't it? Which reminds me of a 2012 quote from that marketing guy, Seth Godin: "Apple had just one customer. He passed away last year." <meaning Steve...

    Why so pessimist about distribution?

rayw, all- I've been thinking about this a lot. And the strategies posted in the thread help, great stuff! But this for me is the crux of the matter-- after all, auto and computer makers want The Answer, too: Will an audience buy my product? And... how do you answer that before going...

    Why so pessimist about distribution?

I like this approach and thinking. May be its own thread-- have you got some ideas on ways to "decommodify" an indie film? Some ideas crossing my brain are films that cross genre, use unique marketing (has social media run its course?), combine media-- I'm tired, not sure these are on the...

    Why so pessimist about distribution?

I read once that in any dream-based "gold rush" (e.g., indie filmmaking), the majority of those who make a living are the sellers of tools like gold pans, wheelbarrows, maps, sluices, pickaxes, etc.... NOT the miners (read: filmmaker). Seems true, and also kinda sad... Sorry to be a bit of a...

    Why so pessimist about distribution?

Great thread folks; thanks a ton for sharing your time, experience and opinions!! @GuerrillaAngel Do you, rayw, or anyone know of a good way to find out which festivals are distributor favorites, beyond the obvious (Sundance, etc.)? Thanks again!

What things do a lot of new filmmakers miss when making their first movie?

Thank You, Zensteve. I just quit a friend's project for this very reason. Hard to do, and I surely hope our friendship endures...

Gh2 - Which hack for purpose?

Agreed with FernandoAndre; I've been doing very well for a number of months with Flowmotion 2.02 on my GH2 (note that I'm not a pro shooter). I recorded a video timelapse of a moonrise with it, and the camera/card went for 30+ minutes without shutting down or any other problem. Looks good...

    Obscure question Need Help!!!

You might try rolling it across a thin, fake "floor" using a strong magnet from beneath the floor. If the car is steel, the magnet beneath might be enough; if the car is plastic or aluminum, see if you can glue some steel into the car or another magnet. My fear is that even if this idea were to...

The GH2, holy price jump batman!

The folks on the personal-view.com site indicate the hackers must wait for a firmware update by Panasonic to hack the G6. Beyond that, I don't know enough about the differences, GH2 v. G6, to give much of a comment-- but there's some footage and other info on the site thread if you search "G6."...

The GH2, holy price jump batman!

I bought my GH2 a year ago, and am quite happy with it, though I'm no D.P. Has anyone checked the personal-view.com site to see if the G6 can be hacked?... Headed there now.

Would I Need a Permit for This?

MrJay, If I were in your shoes, I'd head down to your city or county zoning department (there also may be online maps/guidance) and *quietly* find out if the property is privately held, public, BLM, National Forest, etc. Some folks get really interested if they see cameras (or your actor looks...

Should I get insurance for a somewhat dangerous location?

Let us know what you decided to do and how it worked out. I'm very curious about your film location from this perspective... Would love some pics too, if you get time.

Should I get insurance for a somewhat dangerous location?

Yeah, might be a good idea to check out film insurance costs in your area, cost of a local set medic, and an advisor from the forest service or other organization that works the area (if applicable). Especially if you want to put crew and cast in the water or confined areas. Kudos for thinking...

8 Mistakes Filmmakers Make That Kill Their Careers

Articles like this rub me the wrong way... First of all, you have to have a career before you can kill it, whether it be a hobby, or (like most of us) a money-making venture. Therefore: The ultimate #1 career *builder* comes way before this list (and IMHO, the hardest task of all): Produce a...

tv-writing In the process of writing a TV pilot...

The amnesia part doesn't interest me, but the fact he's back in the "old west" and must use the townsfolk to figure it out, does. I can see it as a series. It has a definite end to it (he discovers the answer- but then of course, you could go awhile with 'how' he gets back) that must be...

    Pre-Production Software - NOT Celtx

While I understand Dreadylocks' issues with the software (10% might be a bit low on utilization, however, even on a short film :-D), a lot of productions want their AD (or whomever) to deliver MM schedules and breakdowns. I try to get paid to AD these days, and in my experience, most projects...

    Pre-Production Software - NOT Celtx

Jax-rox is right on all points. As an AD, I would love to use something other than MM Scheduling (they've made some small improvements over the years), but like our favorite word processor MS Word, some industry standards are hard to step around. I don't use Celtx for breakdowns-- have to go...
