    cinematography What DV does best

I suppose it's all in the intent... I have no problem with shooting cinematic style stuff for DVD release (talking mostly shorts here) on DV. None at all. In fact, I'd be hesitant to shoot a format other than DV, HDV etc for a short since they're mostly for practice in my opinion (unless I...

Student Filmmaker Seeking Advice On Funding

Is the HVX worth renting over the DVX? Absolutely. I'm rather fond of it's variable frame rates myself and the fact that you would be shooting on an industry standard format like DVCproHD would definitely help when trying to find a distributor. I know HDV can produce great images but the fact...

Student Filmmaker Seeking Advice On Funding

Is there any reason this *must* be shot on film? Film is certainly an expensive way to learn!

Good Indie Camera for around 3500

I'm actually really impressed with the A1 and am thinking about getting one. Fantastic image that little guy puts out. If you want to go HD, get great images, and not spend a fortune this would be the way!

    ITOOFC 5 is here!

This is a tough one. I'm inclined to agree with Clive. That would be one heck of a challenge he poses! (though I'm not sure 5minute shorts are capable of so many distinct acts?) I sort of like the idea of a single script too as long as it's a good script. I guess this depends on what we are...

    Canon XM2

If you can record to both channels in camera one thing you can do is set the levels for each channel separately and have one high and one low. That way, you always have a safety mechanism.

    No worries! That's what I figured :D

FWIW, the first link you provided knightly is incorrect. :) Though the picture with the green and yellow plant is fantastic! Part of the issue arises from the fact that painting is subtractive in nature (in which case CMY would be your primaries - I know knightly is well aware of this) as well...

    Canon XM2

What I was trying to say is that stetching the footage to be anamorphic will look worse than in camera anamorphic unless you have a great resampling algorithm - so precisely what you are suggesting. Bad english sentence construction on my part. It's not *pointless* - just realize that you...

    Canon XM2

Oh certainly. I realize the loss of resolution when cropping or shooting 16:9 in camera. It's just easier to shoot anamorphic 16:9 if your output is an anamorphic DVD than to crop and later stretch the footage to be anamorphic. It also doesn't look as good unless you use a high quality...

    Canon XM2

I'm not sure I entirely agree. Shoot 16:9 in camera if you want an anamorphic DVD. If that doesn't matter to you then shoot 4:3 and crop in post. Just realize that a DVD like that won't play correctly on a 16:9 TV.

    editing New Machine/Post Pro Recommendations?

It's amazing how far gamers have pushed GPU tech which is incidentally great for those of us who plan to use it in software for other purposes like video processing. Lots of power built into those suckers. The other amazing this is how even all the current power just isn't enough for the...

    editing New Machine/Post Pro Recommendations?

Agreed. Though so far gains have been fairly linear in nature. I do agree though. For massively parallel processing GPUs are the future I think. With more programming functionality coming out with every new generation we're looking at a bright future. We're talking about several GPUs...

I can't wait until we start seeing Oct-Core (two quad core intels) Mac Pro workstations! Though I can only imagine what the electricity bill would be like for such a machine...

I believe the DVX is actually the cheapest 24p camera at the moment.

I haven't seen this either but I'd really like to do so sometime. I've heard about it but I don't know anything beyond the basic premise. Is this out already? If so where can it be found? This is a topic which I find fascinating. Especially if you've ever studied psychology. Let us be...

    Best Editing System?

Yeah, Windows really irks me. I'm really not a Windows fan.... despite liking PCs. Great points as always freezer. I guess all I can say is take the analysis for what it is worth! No more, no less. :) That really is the ultimate question at hand that everyone will have to answer for...

    editing 35mm Print From Dv/mini-dv

Of course, a PAL DVX will produce even better results than an NTSC DVX so there is value in using PAL over NTSC! :D
