    Panasonic Camera Query

Unfortunately not :( The only SD progressive true 16:9 camera on the market is the XL2 at the moment. That's probably my biggest complaint about the camera. It's not perfect but it's very nice. It's definitely in an entirely different league from the GS400 (hence three times the price).

I love my DVX. Great camera. The images the thing produces never fail to stun me when I review them for editing.

    3D Maya Max!!!

Sort of too bad really :( I liked the direction Maya was going on its own.

cinematography Captured video footage looks worse than in camera

Are you viewing the footage on a production monitor? If not the footage will almost certainly look poor on a computer monitor as they have quite different gamma characteristics. For example, I have some footage that shows up nearly dark on my monitor yet it looks great on the production...

    Blood Explosion

You're crazy alphie! 0.o Check out the poll on safety that's floating around here somewhere. ;) :) How much pain did the actor experience and what sort of vest (and manner of rigging) did you use?

Strange. Is this visible on output files or in the NLE only?

    Safety concerns

Always. I like to shoot outdoors a lot so my list often deals with the terrain in question, potential problems such as property lines (etc), even bear deterent. There's not a whole lot of Gang culture here in Montana =D. You can pretty much do whatever you want at night so long as you don't...

    cinematography Psychedelic Imagery

Edit your sound so it appears "distant and disconected" if you know what I mean (can't think of the proper terminology at the moment). Lava lamp is an interesting idea. You might zoom in and shoot a close up of just the goo moving around in the lamp and then use that as a displacement map for...

    editing Adobe 6.5- Exporting crash

Hmm definitely a tricky issue! I've only worked with Premiere 6.5 for a short time (before moving to Pro) so I'm not familiar with any issues it may have. Have you tried posting on the Adobe Premiere 6.5 forum? You can usually get tech questions solved there in a short time. Usually problems...

    PAL, NTSC and QT question

Depends. It will certainly play on a computer but set top DVD players won't handle the quicktime format. I believe there are some relatively inexpensive plugins out there for conversion between PAL and NTSC. For FCP you can get the Nattress Standards Conversion plugin for 100 USD. His...

    Building a set

What sort of set are you looking to build? I suspect, in most cases, a general framing/construction book would prove of use.

What is with the cheap cameras?

Definitely scams :) Buy from either EVS (evsonline.com) or B&H (bhphoto.com). Both are highly reputable dealers.

cinematography I'm going to need to mortgage the house now...

Under debate. Chris Hurd believes so and he's a good reliable source of course :). Basically it *seems* to boil down to this: 1) It is NOT the same thing as Sony's "cineframe 24" mode 2) The CCDs ARE interlaced 3) It isn't the same as Canon's frame movie mode Canon seems to have found a way...

cinematography I'm going to need to mortgage the house now...

The HVX200 may fit your need depending on what you mean by hand held ;). It's a big camera but it isn't shoulder mount either. Much akin to the FX1/Z1 size. EDIT: And I'm a moron - yep. The HVX is 6K without P2 cards. My error!

Yep, certainly looks like an interesting camera. I'm interested in seeing images from all these new HD cams. Lots of selection these days!

    Aspiring film maker... format??

Depends on how much you know about these cameras... if you don't know much getting a high(er) end camera isn't going to be of any use. How much experience do you have and how much technical knowledge? Technical knowledge is necessary for artistic expression in this field.
