Who to bring on during development?

    1. Unfortunately I have zero budget until I get this Kickstarter campaign completed. But I'll be looking at every free tool out there to make sure I stay engaged in social media for the month or so the campaign will be running. And in the meantime, I'm going to step up my efforts to try to be...

Who to bring on during development?

I'll be producing (though I'd love to find a co-producer to take on some of that workload). I'll also be writing/rewriting. I definitely want to bring in a line producer considering the budget I'm going for (I'm comfortable doing that role myself when we're talking about sub-$100k budgets, but...

    Screenwriting: Hobby or Job?

His pace is 24 hours of writing for a solid first draft (after he has a beat sheet completed). He said whether that's an hour a day for 24 days or two 12 hour days or three 8 hour days depends on what kind of time he has available. My own pace for a first draft is similar. My 120 page scripts...

    Production Diary: Music Video

The band will be with me on the climb, as will my PAs. The stairs are actually really sturdy and stable, as is that entire building. My co-producer was basically running up them, and they didn't even shake. It's just my own stupid fear, which I've been trying to conquer for years. I'm looking at...

    Screenwriting: Hobby or Job?

I think it's 100% possible to make a living writing screenplays. But don't look at it as just writing your own stuff, or just selling to "big" producers. There's a lot of money in rewrites and polishing, too, and if you can be prolific, you could even make a livable amount of money selling to...

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Watched two this weekend at Stowe Story Labs: Ain't Them Bodies Saints: 6/10. Beautiful production design, horrible camera work in parts (I don't know what was up with the steadicam operator, but "steadi" was definitely not the case, which was completely wrong for this kind of film), phenomenal...

    best ever actor/director/cinematographer alive today

I can't pick "best ever", because I don't think there is such a thing. But I will pick one of each for who I'd love to work with: Actor: Johnny Depp (he's amazing. I would be comfortable calling him the best of his generation.) Director: Darren Aronofsky (he just does such cool stuff...)...

Who to bring on during development?

That's a really good point. I'm hoping to hire a DP that I've spoken to in the past about other projects (we've never managed to work together, but he's got an impressive reel and some impressive equipment). But if that doesn't work out, I'll definitely check into what VCAM has for equipment.

Who to bring on during development?

I'm pretty committed to filming in Vermont. It's a very "Vermont" story, and there are some really interesting things going on in the creative community here in the state. Plus, I have lots of support and favors I can call in locally that would disappear and push costs a lot higher if I were to...

Who to bring on during development?

Just spent an amazing weekend at Stowe Story Labs and it's making me rethink my approach to producing my feature next year. For shorts I still want to do the zero budget thing (I love it!), but I'm now looking at doing the feature in the $500k range. My funding approach is currently looking...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Unfortunately/fortunately (I'm trying to look at it as the latter) I'll still have to go up to the 3rd floor. That's for a different shot. The tower is actually completely enclosed, it's just the stairwell that's sketchy since you can see straight through the metal-grate stairs all the way to...

    Production Diary: Music Video

I spent the last three days at Stowe Story Labs, which was an absolutely phenomenal experience! I picked up a few ideas that I can use on the video when it comes to editing and putting it all together (even though SSL was aimed at features). But beyond that, I connected with a guy who has an...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Of course my co-producer has decided that we need to get some footage on the third floor of the tower. The one my fear of heights prevented me from going up to. I'm gonna suck it up and go. I told him that if all else fails, one of the guys can go behind me and one in front of me and then I'll...

    Tripod

I have a Pearstone VT-2100 that's pretty decent for the price (I think it was around $80). I can get nice, smooth shots with it.

    Production Diary: Music Video

We (I say "we" when I really mean my co-producer) were originally going to build a dolly, but decided against it because of time and the location. The floors are horribly uneven, have holes in them, etc., so even with a track it would require a ton of setup to try to get it usable. And because...

Can you recommend a DSLR for under £1000/$1500

I would go with a GH2/GH3. I have a hacked GH1 and LOVE it. So versatile. And the fact that just about any glass out there can be used with it (with an adapter) is a huge bonus. I love vintage lenses (and they're cheap).

    Production Diary: Music Video

I've been putting together my shot list for the video (for the band footage anyway) and would love some input/suggestions. Basically, if you want to tear it apart, go for it! I want to make sure I'm 110% prepared when we actually get there, since I figure we'll have about 8 hours to actually...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Another quick update. I've been wrestling with how to tie together all of the band footage we have planned as well as the narrative shots we want to get. There's a similar theme among the narrative parts, but they're not a story per se. Well, today it just sort of came to me, to use an...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Yeah, I will definitely do everything I can to foster this relationship. The cool thing is that the guy is really nice, as is the caretaker. I'll probably send them each a thank-you gift when we wrap filming, as well as copies of the video on DVD. This is actually where I feel pretty...

    Production Diary: Music Video

 It's moderately inaccessible. 4-wheel-drive and reasonable ground-clearance is pretty much a necessity, and it's about 5 miles up a mountain from the nearest "town" (which has no store or anything like that, just a school and a post office). The nearest decent size town (one with a gas...
