    Production Diary: Music Video

It's pretty basic stuff, but the band footage is supposed to look like a pirate tv signal, so there are parts that will have static, etc. there's also the fake drone footage that needs to have some text/crosshairs/etc. added to it. And there will possibly be some minor green screen with a tv (so...

The hack is super easy. There are tons of step-by-step guides out there. On the GH1, at least, it takes about 10 minutes.

    Dialouge

There's a scene in the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice that perfectly illustrates the power of silence and what is not said. I can't seem to find the clip anywhere, but it's when Lizzie is visiting her friend Mrs. Collins and Darcy shows up unannounced. It's filled with awkward silence and, to...

I'd have to disagree. Video resolution is the same for both. There are more lenses via adapter available for the GH2. And I find the GH2 image quality is much better, particularly when it's been hacked. There are tons of video comparisons out there that show this. Here's a good one (which also...

GH2, hands down. I've got a hacked GH1, and I love it. The nice thing about the GH1/GH2/GH3's are that you can use virtually any manual lens with them, with the right adapter, since they're mirrorless. I've started a nice little collection of vintage glass with mine.

cinematography Trying to make hand held camera look good.

We used a baby stroller as a dolly on the music video I just shot. Turned out awesome. Super smooth. And that would blend well enough on the street you could get away with it.

    Production Diary: Music Video

Very rough cut is done! I just finished up the (very) rough cut of the video. We're still missing some bits at the beginning and end (that we have yet to film), and maybe one part in the middle, but otherwise it's coming together nicely. The rough cut probably took about 6 hours to put together...

    Production Diary: Music Video

I've started in on the rough cut, and took a break to play around with some color grading options (that's my favorite part, so I tend to mess around with it periodically throughout the editing process). Here's one thing I came up with, layering some prebuilt looks: I want to go pretty extreme...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Spent the afternoon with my co-producer going over all the raw footage. I made some notes about which parts we liked in each take, which takes we can pretty much just toss, and how we might want to edit certain sections. He also told me some things to watch out for. We found a few funny clips...

Here are some frames from my hacked GH1. It's a custom hack, but I'm pretty sure I based it on the Blackout Powell 42 hack... Look at that motion blur! The next one I'm really impressed with. It was done kind of on the fly. All we had for lights were two battery-powered warm...

GoPro Frame Grabs! Here are a couple of frames from the GoPro. No color correction, no adjustments whatsoever, this is just the raw footage. Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed by it. I'm sure I could get more out of it with some practice, too. This one is 4k, shot from the zip line on its way...

editing PP/AE editing workflow for music video

This is great stuff. Unfortunately, I don't have the ProRes codec on my MacBook (and I'm not crazy about spending $50 on Compressor or Motion just so I can get it). I may just work with proxies in AE. My computer is not liking the 4k files very much, but it's not terrible either. I'm...

editing PP/AE editing workflow for music video

I've got a bunch of the footage for the music video I've been working on done, and I need to start editing. I've got basically three different kinds of footage: - h.264 files from my hacked GH1, 1080p, 24fps - 2.7K Cine files from my GoPro, 24fps - 4k files from my GoPro, 15fps (I realize now...

    Production Diary: Music Video

The general consensus along the band members is that yesterday's shoot was awesome ("best day ever" was used more than once) and that it totally exceeded expectations. That's a huge deal for me, since this is my first music video, and really my first film project that actually includes other...

    Accessories/Equipment for Canon 550d?

For the bright light issue, get yourself an ND filter. A variable one is great, otherwise get a set. That will block out a lot of light, allowing you to set your aperture where you want for DOF, rather than having to set it to block out unwanted light.

    Production Diary: Music Video

It's a Pearstone VT-2000. Nothing special, got it for about $80. It's a semi-fluid head so if you're really careful you can get decent panning shots with it. So today I'm working on getting my new MacBook Pro up and running, as my old one won't handle the 2.7k and 4k footage I got with the...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Yeah, our day went really smoothly. Ended up with about 35-40 takes of the guys playing (I think they were ready to throw me off the tower if I'd made them play it much more), plus some other cool footage of them doing things, just taking advantage of what the location had to offer. My two PAs...

Taking a second to post while the band gets their gear loaded. So far today has gone far better than I could have hoped! We're about to head into the tower for a final shot before calling it a day.
