Canon recommends cards with a Class 6 rating or higher for video. I have shot video in Class 4 cards, but I would trust that. Just get a class 10 SD card and bedone with it.

Are you talking CF? Cause the t3i takes SD cards, and I think they top out at 30mb/s (class 10)

If the explosion happens offscreen, and you want to see the efect on the character(s), just have someone throw dirt and debris around them. Watch a ton of explosion footage. The explosion on the video you posted, looks like a landmine explosion. A granade launcher explodes on impact so it does...
