    Is Michael Bay underrated?

Nothing succeeds like success. Michael Bay is just like PT Barnum and Rush Limbaugh, a savvy businessman who knows exactly who his audience is and exactly how to cater to them, and has become fabulously wealthy as a result. If your goal as a filmmaker is strictly to become fabulously wealthy...

A New Golden Age of Cinema? Thoughts?

Depends how one defines "golden age". If the definition is a financial one for the big, mainstream producers, then he's probably right. If it's supposed to mean a wide spectrum of films finding distribution and turning a profit, then he's living in a fool's paradise.

    SEX in Cinema - Debate

Nope. It's 100% a marketing issue. "Nudity", more often than not, earns a film an R rating. Most studio films no longer target adult audiences because adults don't go see movies in the theater much anymore. The coveted rating nowadays is PG-13, because that targets the largest filmgoing...

Strange bargain: Write this for me and I'll let you co-direct this movie with me?

I don't quite understand your concern. If you're writing the script alone, it is your property to do with as you please. Even if you used his ideas, ideas cannot be copyrighted. When the script is finished, register it with the WGA. If he offers to buy it from you, consider the offer and...

    SEX in Cinema - Debate

Totally agree. Neo-prudism is pathetic hypocrisy. However, I will point out that drama is conflict, and conflict is often violent. Not (usually) a lot of conflict in sex. But the MPAA's double-standard isn't about that. It's simply reflecting society-at-large's effed-up sense of "morality".

    Is Hercules copyrighted?

Stories/characters published prior to 1923 are in the public domain. Since Hercules (aka Heracles) dates back to around 1200BC, I think you're pretty safe. :)

    Whats your film workflow?

    1. Drink heavily. 2. Cast. 3. Make up stuff. 4. Shoot the stuff I made up. 5. Reshoot because the camera didn't record for some reason. 6. Drink more. 7. Write script. 8. Shoot more stuff to fill in plot holes. 9. Raise funds. 10. Spend funds to replenish spent alcohol. 11. Get bored and abandon...

    The Road

Hey Chris, if you have The Road on DVD and watch the behind-the-scenes extras you may see snippets of an interview with Viggo Mortensen on location in costume and makeup. I was holding the boom mic during that interview. :D It was recorded the day they were shooting the beach night scene...

cinematography Why don't more directors operate the camera themselves?

Well, I've been shooting film and video for 35 years myself, so I can probably hold my own in that regard (no pun intended). ;)

How important are these film school rules of cinema?

There's a difference between hand-holding the camera and "shaky-cam". Hand-held camera can be both a practical consideration and an aesthetic choice. A good operator can hand-hold a camera without drawing the audience's attention to the fact. "Shaky-cam", however, is a strictly stylistic...

Yup. A good DP can make a few floods, clamp lamps, and paper lanterns look better than an amateur with a truckload of Arri gear.
