    lighting Light ambience question

Yes, those are lens flares. They are a result of the florescent fixtures in the parking garage. Flares from incandescent lights manifest differently. In the case of The Promise, I don't imagine they were intentional, as they are a dead giveaway that this is a low-budget, amateur movie. A DP...

    Film in Restaurants/Cafes/Bars Locations

Nice thing about bars is they often do not open until the afternoon, so you can usually arrange to shoot for several hours in the morning. As others have said, it helps tremendously if the owner knows you and/or others in your cast/crew. And most definitely have proof of insurance!

    archived-videos M&E Tracks

I am by no means an expert on this topic, but I can tell you when I cut sound for my feature, each and every bit of dialogue was completely isolated, down to fractions of a frame, and looped room tone laid over on a separate track so that there weren't any noticeable shifts in background sound...

    Pitching a script

ditto:  To shed a touch more light on the process, as this is something I've been doing for over 10 years now... Typically, neither the screenwriter nor his/her agent pitches directly to the studios. The agent (or manager, in my own case) pitches the material to production companies with...

What exactly does a Producer do?

Usually: Producer = buys a script, finds the money, hires a director, makes sure the shoot progresses as smoothly as possible, arranges for distribution, collects the Best Picture Oscar. Co-producer = partner of the producer, may or may not be involved in the actual day-to-day production...

    Turning up Audio in post?

Short answer: No. Raising the volume also raises the noise floor. Long answer: There are ways to minimize/disguise said noise. Too big a subject for me to cover here. Besides, there are others (Alcove, APE) who are much more knowledgeable about such things. I think they mean you can't...

    tascam dr100 question

WARNING: ZOMBIE THREAD! Resurrecting this to ask - regarding Alcove's quote above - is the DR-100mkII capable of doing that by itself, or must one have an external mixer feeding both channels? If the former, how do I set it to do so? In MONO mode, the levels on both channels stay the same.

    Producers salaries

Typically, the producer is the person who organizes the project, secures funding and hires everyone else, so s/he is paid whatever s/he budgets for him/herself. A producer who does not do so in a realistic fashion will not be doing it for very long.

When to give actors a copy of the film?

I combined the two. First screening was cast/crew only. Second was a public fundraiser.

When to give actors a copy of the film?

It depends. Did you pay your actors? If so, you aren't obligated to give them copies until you secure distribution. If you did not pay them, you would be a real jerk to refuse. I was not able to pay the actors in my last feature, so I handed out DVDs at the premiere. They want to see the...

editing Can a movie switch frame rates, for this purpose?

May as well set the timeline for whatever the predominant frame rate is. Sounds like mostly 24p with occasional 60i, yes? It doesn't really matter because FCP will render any non-compliant clip so that it matches. But if you set the timeline for the rate you're using most, you'll minimize the...

    Moving lights

Yeah, it's definitely a "to each his own" kind of thing. I build all my own dimmer packs so the cost there is minimal, and I don't "wait around" for them to warm up. Even if you don't preheat them, just ramping up instead of jolting adds hours of bulb life. Plus, 9 times out of 10 there are...

editing Can a movie switch frame rates, for this purpose?

Do you mean 60i? I don't know of a prosumer level camera that shoots 60p ('course, I haven't looked at new cameras for a while, so anything is possible). Do you understand the difference between the 'p' and the 'i' designations? As for FCP settings, I'm not sure which settings you're talking...

editing Can a movie switch frame rates, for this purpose?

The folks who have answered 'yes' are correct. You may shoot at 24p, but when you watch the footage on a TV, it has been reinterpreted to 30 frames, which is standard for video. The missing fields are interpolated, otherwise it would play back 20% faster than real time. Since 60i and 30p are...
