Just got into Chapman's Dodge School of Film for Film Production

My son Jonah Hwang worked on this Chapman project called, "Playhouse of Cards." I thought the students did a great job. We visited the campus to do ADR and thought it was very nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vYlb9Xz3kA

    Lighting Kit: Opiniouns / Suggestions

I disagree. Cameras are constantly changing, but lighting remains basically the same. The main change that I've seen is the move to LED lights. Lights are a good investment because you use them for a long time. Unless they are very high powered, lights are not particularly expensive and so...

Purchasing a script VS. Writing your own.

I advocate purchasing or optioning a screenplay. Every situation is different. You could possibly get it for free. However, the most important thing you get with purchasing a screenplay is objectivity. If you write the screenplay yourself, you can never be fully objective even with a script...

Making a feature just for YouTube?

"More than a third of all video viewing time on YouTube can be attributed to videos that are 20 minutes or longer. The new data point was mentioned by YouTube representatives at an internal event for YouTube partners in Los Angeles Tuesday, and later confirmed by a YouTube spokesperson."...

Playhouse of Cards - Check it out

Check out this web series Playhouse of Cards where my son Jonah Hwang is one of the leads. It’s a parody of the Netflix House of Cards. My son plays Doug Stamper and his very good friend Reid Miller plays the Kevin Spacey role. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vYlb9Xz3kA...

can we all agree the problem with indie films is lack ofstory andwriting?

FWIW, in 2009 I produced a feature called Geek Mythology. While it did get distribution, the response from people who viewed the DVD was pretty bad. I knew there were production value and technical issues, but I thought the acting and story were fine. Then one of my distributors put it on their...

    DVD vs VOD

From my first hand experience, by the time you factor in the wholesale cost 50% off, the actual cost of manufacturing (one dollar a unit), the distributor's cut, shipping, and returns, my $14.99 DVD reaped me only a couple of dollars in profit. I've found VOD is the way to go if you actually...

    Surviving Family on Amazon Prime!

I like the pay per view business model more than one fixed payment of Netflix. Have you received any offers from Netflix? For the indie filmmaker, Netflix doesn't make a lot of sense unless you have enough leverage to get a significant payment from them.

    Surviving Family on Amazon Prime!

Does Amazon pay you a one time fee or are you paid every time someone watches a certain amount of your film? In the Amazon/ Kindle publishing side, they pay per download on the KDP select.

Have you made money from your film?

That's awesome! The mere fact you have some sort of income stream provides hope. I have some questions: ( a ) What marketing have you done, if any, to promote your film Leap 1 &2 ? Your views for Leap are pretty steady even after it's debut. ( b ) Do you think your subject matter...

Best, Cheapest Mic for a No-Budget Filmmaker?

My thoughts on ADR: (1) If you ADR the entire film, it may be better than sporadic use because it will seem normal. We've all seen bad ADR, and it can stick out like a sore thumb. (2) You have to bring back all of the actors sometimes several months after the shoot which can be problematic...

Best, Cheapest Mic for a No-Budget Filmmaker?

I've only used the Sennheiser ME66 which is the workhorse of the Indie world on my shoots with a H4N Zoom. While I'm always amazed how it captures mostly the voices of the actors, there is still some background noise. I realize even the greatest microphone won't filter out an overhead plane or...

What are distributors doing for indie today?

Thanks for the encouragement, APE. That's a very reasonable stance. If I could price my film lower on Amazon or iTunes, I would do it. 99 cents or even 49 cents per download. I'm not trying to compete against the studios and their technical expertise. Even Mara from Surviving Family which...

Anyone have their movie on iTunes?

I understand the strategy of getting 70% of a higher retail price versus Amazon where you get a smaller percentage and may have to price it a little lower, but I don't agree with it. I think it's two separate markets. Once 2015 rolls around, your film is a year older and loses some value...

What are distributors doing for indie today?

I haven't submitted Outcall to a QC test but there are a few scenes that may be too dark and I'm certain the sound probably has some issues. I think it looks better than Paranormal Activity, but people like APE and Alcove Audio have me paranoid that my sound isn't up to professional standards...

What are distributors doing for indie today?

iTunes sells a lot of movies. 28 million Apple TVs have been sold and I venture to guess that people who have Apple TV are more likely to purchase a VOD. If you have a film that will pass Quality Control, it might be a mistake to skip iTunes. My film wouldn't pass QC, and I don't have the time...

What are distributors doing for indie today?

On every Amazon and iTunes movie page, they suggest other movies purchased by customers. So if someone purchased Insidious 2 and my movie Outcall, another customer viewing Insidious 2 would be aware of my movie also. I've done very little marketing mainly posts on filmmaking websites and have...
