Just an update: this short won one of the audience choice awards at the Third Street Film Festival in Baton Rouge, LA on New Year's Eve :D

Yeah, I like "B-Roll" in that "Super 8" sense. Just got to be sure to establish in the trailer/early in the movie what B-Roll actually is for those audience members slower on the uptake.

Totally used the little aluminum clip lights for all our early stuff. The giant Home Depot work lights can be used - but be sure you put them kind of far away. I know in our first feature we had them too close to a girl in a bikini and she looks like she's glowing due to the reflection. :cool:

Surprised you haven't gotten more comments.....I thought that was a very well done short. Very well done. And the....ummm "substance"...whatever you guys used to create it was near perfect. Distrubingly so. Excellent!

My first question would be, are you working with professional/experienced actors? If you are, then they should be able to do a lot of that themselves. Actors should be collaborated with - they are supposed to bring things to the table, you shouldn't have to give them everything. Next question -...

I assume if you are working with a professional that he is available by phone/email/in person before the shoot? Sit down with him and talk about what you want to shoot and let him point out potential concerns and tell you more about what you need to do to ensure everyone's safety.

I was wondering if anyone here watches any web series often? If so, which ones? What makes it good? As you might suspect, I'm thinking of putting one together.

In addition to what others have said - make big signs that say "movie shooting" and people will figure it out. You could even be as bold to make one that says "relax: the guns are fake". Just a thought.

Indeed, I've gotten good feedback that way. I also find that if you find websites/forums that are on the same topic/theme as your video, and you post a link there, people will respond. Of course, brace yourself, it's the internet and people say what they think :-)

Plenty of good fake blood recipes online to do practical effects. And it's cheap to make. The one I use is just water, food coloring, and cocoa powder. Tastes like chocolate milk and looks great. My personal opinion is that anything you can do on set, do it on set. Then enhance with digital fx.

I would echo much of what has been said and add, "Just do it." You can learn a heck of a lot from books and by watching other documentaries, but to really learn - get out there and start doing it. I'm a fan of the "trial by fire" method. It's like riding a bike - you don't really learn how to do...
