    Canon EOS 5D Mark II

We transcode all of our footage into Prores BEFORE editing, yes. I find that it speeds up the response time and is generally a more robust codec to work with. Not that I've noticed. It shouldn't degenerate the footage to any appreciable degree.

editing Red Camera & Final Cut Pro

If you can afford to shoot on the Red, just budget a little bit of money to upgrade to the latest FCP. I don't see the point of going to that all trouble and then trying to post on an ancient NLE.

editing Red Camera & Final Cut Pro

Red footage requires version 6 or higher. I haven't heard of anyone getting it to work in 4.5, which is a pretty old version. Time to upgrade. :) It will automatically know. In fact, new versions of FCP can adjust your timeline settings automatically to match your clip.

What do you guys think of this camera?

Just for the record, a CF card can hold a lot more than 4GB. I personally have two 8GB CF cards and they go as high as 32 GB. Not that it sounds like you should get a 7D. It's not a great camera for event photography. I just wanted to make sure you had the proper info.

    Actors Entitled to Free DVD?

Copy/Credit/Meals, absolutely. Transportation is your discretion. I've never been compensated or compensated others for it and haven't heard of anyone else doing this either as a standard practice.

cinematography Bad SD or good SD

The reason I mentioned the 1/30 was because it was the closest to 1/60 of the options that he listed. Come to think of it, though, it doesn't make sense since all the shutter speeds he listed were actually slower than 1/30, but the shutter speed in the video is clearly a lot faster. So...

cinematography Bad SD or good SD

If 1/30 is the slowest it'll go, then go with that and then adjust everything else around it. This will mean cutting the light down. If you can't stop down the aperture or adjust the ISO, then an ND filter is the best option. My lighting critique wasn't so much about compensating for the...

cinematography Bad SD or good SD

I'm not sure what you mean by bad or good. There's essentially no lighting. The whole thing looks kind of flat. And the automatic shutter on the camera gives it a very stroby effect in the sunlight. What would help you a lot is an ND filter that cuts the light and gives you more cinematic...

    Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Shotgun mic to the H4N recording the audio. No sound was used from the 7D itself. We synced the audio from the H4N to the picture from the 7D, and experienced no sync or sound drifting issues at all.

Images to Video and Vice Versa

Btw, I'm not sure about this, but Picassa may be able to produce slide shows from a set of photos that could be rendered as video. iPhoto can do this.

Images to Video and Vice Versa

Yes, you are mistaken. One photo can be held as little as one frame of video. So 25 photos could equal 1 second of video.

I can vouch for the Zoom H4N. Great little device.

I was wearing headphones and couldn't hear them at all. I could hear the other noises, so there was nothing wrong with my headphones. At the very least, you might want to look into looping that section.

    DSLRs for video (memory??)

Because at the end of each shooting day, you offload your cards onto a hard drive (and a backup drive) for storage. That's how.

In that first scene with the two guys, am I supposed to be able to hear what they're saying?

    DSLRs for video (memory??)

It's a matter of arithmetic. The Canon 7D, which is the camera I have, takes up 4GB for every 12 minutes of video. With a 16GB card, that means about 48 minutes of total shooting time. For narrative filmmaking, that should be more than enough. With two cards on hand, I can't see you running...
