character OFF SCREEN and CON'T on same CHARACTER Line

I certainly was not arguing for people to use CONT'D. I think the arguments made in the links @Unknown Screenwriter make the case that it's superfluous in most cases. I was arguing that the use of CONT'D has not fallen out of favor in the way that CONTINUED at the bottom and top of a...

character OFF SCREEN and CON'T on same CHARACTER Line

I'm going to disagree with @Unknown Screenwriter. I believe that scene CONTINUEDs fell out of favor. Those appeared at the bottom of the page when a scene continued onto the next page. I believe dialog CONT'D is still very much in use.

website How do you promote your indie film?

Movies have been forever ruined for me as a casual viewer ever since film school. I don't care about spoilers. I watch movies like a football coach might watch last week's game... to dissect the technicalities.

website How do you promote your indie film?

Personally, the first thing I do when I want to know something about a movie I want to see is go to IMDB.

website How do you promote your indie film?

I don't mind sharing, but I'll caution that everyone asks this question and not everyone will answer... ummm... truthfully. You can get some idea of what filmmakers might spend on marketing (including a website) from a budget, but it's not always a good guide. The budget for the latest film I...

website How do you promote your indie film?

I read an article few years ago about the way people are creating their online presence. The article made it clear that websites are still a thing. The film's website should contain more static information (film synopsis, cast and crew info, how to buy or watch the film, contact info of the...

website How do you promote your indie film?

At a point where I have a film that needs a website and social media updates. We have a Facebook page, but need the website.

FilmFreeway and Vimeo: who's watching your film?

One of my early jobs working in the movie business was as an assistant to a low budget producer. I did all sorts of things for him (yes, including picking up his dry cleaning). One of my jobs was to read through the unsolicited screenplays we received. My boss told me, "read the first 10...

FilmFreeway and Vimeo: who's watching your film?

Yes, I currently have a film embedded on FilmFreeway. Not all festivals accept submission through FF (SXSW as an example), some require FilmFreeway. Some will allow a link OR FF. In those cases, I'll send a link unique to that festival.

FilmFreeway and Vimeo: who's watching your film?

If you have your film embedded on FilmFreeway, all that Vimeo will be able to show you is that someone from FilmFreeway watched your film. Vimeo will not be able to distinguish which festival viewed it. The way I've set things up is to upload the same film to Vimeo multiple times and then use...

pre-production Novice producer has compensation question (A-List actor project)

I highly recommend getting an entertainment attorney. While an agent or manager can help you navigate a career (or part of it), the entertainment attorney can make sure this deal is favorable to you. An attorney won't be cheap, but unlike an agent you won't have to sell yourself for them to...

pre-production Novice producer has compensation question (A-List actor project)

The subject is complicated and ultimately depends on the unique arrangements of THIS deal, but I'll add a couple of thoughts here. The only tax credit I have personal experience with is the NY state credit. A producer can earn it for production and post-production expenses if they meet the tax...

    The Cinematic Experience

Also, you could break down sound further (music, SFX, dialog). In a way, you've broken down the visual elements on the right while lumping sound all together on the left.

    The Cinematic Experience

We all know that sound is a hugely important and yet often underestimated part of the film experience. I don't know that I'd scale it way back, but I would reduce sound a bit. A movie after all is moving pictures. I think you have grossly underestimated acting. My belief about the cinematic...

You want to learn to use flags. Solids to block the light hitting certain areas and scrims that reduce it.

copyright How can I protect my screenplay from theft?

I have been working on a screenplay the past few months, based on an idea I began to work on last year. I've told two people about my idea (one industry, one non-). Just read last week that a very well known director is working on a concept very similar to mine. While discouraging, I know...

cinematography How to match cameras ???

Unlike DSLRs, digital video cameras have something called a base ISO. It is the natural ISO or light sensitivity of the sensor. I've used the XA10 (and I really liked it), but don't know what the base ISO is. If I had to guess I'd say 400 ISO. The camera operates best at its base ISO. If...

cinematography How to match cameras ???

In short, yes and no. Different cameras have different looks due to the differences in sensors. In the film days, different cameras could run the same film through them. This is no longer the case. Different sensors produce different looks, period. The fact that you're in the Canon family...

In my opinion, it would make the two characters feel like they are not in the same space. It would make it feel that they are disconnected.

    critique Lily Fire (Screenplay)

Watching Aaron Sorkin's Masterclass, he makes the distinction between plausible impossibility and implausible possibility. His observation (which I believe is attributable to Aristotle) is that audiences will buy the former, but not the latter. The latter will take them out of the story. So...
