Do you care about back story?

Backstory is anything that happened before the FADE IN. And that not only includes the characters, but anything in the world you've created. Backstory is essential for subtext and overall character depth. While it may not translate to the screen visually all the time, as a writer I do a...

    What's the Protocol for...

Typically, the ampersand indicates joint development and the "and" indicates a rewrite by someone else without joint involvement: [Name of Film] by [Your Name] and [Original Author] What I've personally used previously when the story was joint developed and I wrote the screenplay was...

    Robert McKee's thoughts...Agree or Disagree?

The quote is about writing the film (screenwriting), not the film itself. Hence, "..you must not mistake words for writing."

    Robert McKee's thoughts...Agree or Disagree?

Agree, especially about the emotional impact. Dialogue and description (and actions) are just the tools to convey the story. You could have the best dialogue and the best descriptions in the world, but it doesn't mean squat without a story worth telling and worth watching, a story that...

    The Community Hand Show

Seems as though interest is waning for some reason. I'm still working on writing a segment, and I know Knightly signed up to produce it. But honestly if this thing has died on the vine (like countless other "community" project attempts I've seen come and go over the years), then I will likely...

First few pages... Compelling or Crap?

You didn't say "Works". You said "Word". This forum is about screenwriting, not about word processing. I wrote my first script in Wordperfect 5.1 with manual tab stops. What's your point? I guess Final Draft is rather obstinate, huh? That's what I use and have for years. I...

First few pages... Compelling or Crap?

Microsoft Word is not free. CeltX is free. If one cannot afford a screenwriting program like Final Draft, then use CeltX. Spend the time writing, not worrying about where to set your tab stops. It's no longer necessary in this day and age.

    Tips on getting started?

And in building your house, the foundation is the first thing that must get laid before you can start moving up. The foundation in writing is concept. Without a solid concept, you risk building a house of cards. Theme can evolve as the story evolves, but it's a good idea to have that in mind...

    Murder in a blizzard.

Just be careful. When you start placing your story around inclement weather, your production costs go way up. Nature rarely cooperates with production schedules. Incidentally, if there's no body, it's generally considered a missing person. Your evidence would need to be beyond compelling...

    The Community Ideas Hub

Not much board activity on this lately. Did everyone else go on vacation, too? Or is everyone busy writing (like me)? Up to five pages now. Should have a completed draft by the weekend.

Organ Donor - Two One Charlie

Thanks. :) Second "seriously" was a mocking tone if you're referring to mom's response. But I just got back from vacation. We were in Colorado (Steamboat Springs). First time I've booted a computer since last Wednesday. Haven't written the second half of this segment yet, although I know...

    Black Swan

I went to see it solely on word of mouth and didn't even watch a trailer beforehand. I had no idea what to expect and was riveted through most of the film. What's funny is I didn't even know it was Aronofsky until the credits rolled. And then it all just made sense at a much more profound...

Organ Donor - Two One Charlie

The link in the first post is the only draft of my segment so far. The direction I take it is based solely on consensus. I have at least three different endings and two different lines of action on the table. And then there's the question of "tone". What "tone" are we going for here? :weird:

Organ Donor - Two One Charlie

I've brainstormed a way over lunch to eliminate the conspiracy reference and just make it an unfortunate work tragedy (changing the "suits" to thieves looking for drugs or something). This way he becomes just another hopeful recipient and all of it can take place on the same day as the drawing...

Organ Donor - Two One Charlie

Okay, Mr. Producer. Analyze the pieces, summarize the primary line of action (the "spine"), and we'll give it some flesh and bones. :) Ideally, we need a head writer/editor, someone who has the time to work with all pieces and all writers to maintain cohesion. I personally would not have the...

Organ Donor - Two One Charlie

I guess you missed the fact that his assailant was dead. But this is why I needed to throw it out in infancy because I don't want to continue with this direction unless there's consensus that it can fit with the whole. I could always drop the whole conspiracy angle and just end with Bruce...
