Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

Someone needs to frame this. It's the second time you've said it in the thread and I hope it sticks this time. Maybe it's getting buried beneath the audio conversation (which is important, yes), but totally agree. One hundred damned percent.

Well would ya look at that... something we agree on. xDDDD

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

Well, yeah, if there are people on the forum that you do trust then for sure. In this case, I'm probably speaking from a place that's way too "specific", as in having people that I can access for feedback. Not everyone has that, and it's short-sighted to either assume they do or assume that...

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

This is something I don't understand: why people post their work on forums or anywhere else looking for feedback on how to make it better from a majority of people who actually don't know what they're doing either? Find someone who's work you admire and opinion you know you can trust, ask them...

If I keep accepting roles as an extra, will I always be seen as a face in the crowd?

I'm not sure how agencies work where you're at, but I'd suggest finding some short films to grab speaking roles on. Start small if it's not working the other way.

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

How much was any sort of advertising costs? So on and so forth? Just a lot of different factors that we don't know for sure. Even though I"m saying that, however, I know of at least one person that passes through these very boards that's done much more than that self distroing his own feature...

Martha Marcy may Marlene is an indie feature, as well.

<500K? Don't you mean <50K? I have a feeling that's the kind of feature film that Harmonica is talking about. At least that's what I'm talking about.

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

Well, even if you're right, it kinda doesn't matter: it's far cheaper to make a good looking movie with sub par audio than it is to make a bad looking movie with incredible audio. That's why they're no-budgeters, because they do not have the budget for it.

Is it me or do a lot of indie films in festivals feel kind of empty?

Agree with CF. I've seen the trailer a few times over the last three months and I've been waiting to catch the movie. It looks REALLY good to me, haunting, and I'm not a sound designer but I felt it was adequate enough for my tastes. Of course, again, I'm not a sound designer. I am an image...

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

A movie should definitely be as long as it needs to be, especially in this day and age. Trying to fit a movie that only has sixty minutes of worthwhile content into an eighty plus format is a quick way to not get a good distribution deal. Despite what's preferred by distributors (Who aren't...

Is using a clapper board really necessary in the age of scratch tracks?

Start rolling when the slate's in the frame. First frame = thumbnail

Top Tips: Profiting From A Feature Film

Agreed. I'll turn on a horror that I know from the get-go's going to be bad before I turn on a drama with names. Horror is pretty easy to satisfy just by doing something, but most are just flat-out disappointing to the core.

Is using a clapper board really necessary in the age of scratch tracks?

You don't have to use one if you don't want to, especially on a no budget production. Using a slate without a dedicated second AC can DEFINITELY be a very time consuming thing, and you're right, when you can scratch and sync every night if you want, bin scenes in a project with ease or...

    Dissapointing...

I can't. Not off the top of my head, anyway. With a lot of money it could definitely happen, I wouldn't doubt that there is a case but you're right, I have no idea of anyone that has done that or at least I can't remember right now. Also, yeah, if everyone else is making the decisions for...

shooting-film OK, Now I'm confused (Focal lengths 35mm film vs FF and crop sensors)

You're confusing yourself by trying to relate everything to full frame, and by not factoring the relationship in distance between film plane, subject, foreground and background. The latter has the most impact on composition, followed by focal length. 35mm and 50mm could be considered "normals"...

This is advice, and good advice. Realistic, and honest. But, I typically agree with Donned, anyway.

    Dissapointing...

This isn't what the comment said, it said the exact opposite. Logical, but the comment was not. Maybe, maybe not. Depends on what the shorts or the features are. Never said it was bad advice, there wasn't any advice being given, just a statement that didn't make sense (as it was stated...
