    the waiting game

My production got pushed back about 5 weeks because another production and my production were scheduled on the same date at the same location. The location guy gave me a discount for his mistake and because of my low budget, I took the offer. I think I spent the extra money working in prepping...

    Concept Art

This is pretty amazing stuff. I think concept design is a must for any film, even on a low budget level. It helps everyone visualize what they are trying to achieve. I spent 5 months on concept design for my film but it was nothing as flashy as this! Good work!! Also, great concept work will...

    cinematography Recreating New Wave look

Shoot film - kodak, and add a type of frost or soft filter in front of the lens. Might want to look into older model lenses. Also you will need to mess with it in color correction to get that perfect pastel color. Keep in mind that costumes and set pieces are just as important.

    editing ADR Recording Tips

The second best thing to do is record it in a studio, bring a mono portable speaker and play it at the locations and rerecord it again with a mic. Remember to give variation to the placement of the mic so you can have more options to choose from in the mix. I've heard of people doing this, but I...

    editing ADR Recording Tips

This will save you a lot of time and trouble. Also, if you need to add ADR to one or two sentences in a scene, and it has to be done in a studio, I suggest replacing the dialogue for the entire scene. That way the ADR wont stick out like a thorn.

Sundance - Not reaaaaally for independent films

You have to understand the history and evolution of Sundance to know why none of us will ever get in. It started out just like all the other fests "with good intentions" but now it is nothing but a business. Even if for some reason you got into the fest, your film would probably get lost in the...

    Where to go???

Film Festivals in the United States and all over the world are mainly designed for extremely dramatic films with a social statement, or Horror Films. I dont know how much horror is in your film, but u might have a better chance at making it into the top tier fests if you have more horror in it...

    fight scenes

Content is king. When you watch clips from any reality disaster, your jaw just drops. It's because it's real and it's crazy. Hire some pros to do some crazy stunts and your audience will thank you for it. But if you dont have that kind of budget, you will have to resort to a lot of editing tricks.

    How to contact Distributors?

There are ALOT of distributors out there. I suggest you goto all the local video stores and pick up titles and films similar to yours. Look on the back cover and write down the distributors name. The chances of getting Lions Gate, Millenium, Icon, Miramax, Dimension, without a middle man who is...

    how do i get funding?

This is the way to do it - it took me a year, but I was working on developing the script at the same time so it wasn't a complete waste.

The Director... What exactly does he do?

A director is the man with the answers to a million questions. An efficient director will have the answers in a matter of seconds. Basically there is no time to think. The minute you flinch you will lose faith from your crew.

IS THIS A GOOD IDEA OR AM I CRAZY

The truth is, there are so many crazy ideas floating around that it's hard for anyone to say whether something is a good idea or not. It all boils down to execution. Can you pull this off well enough that it will entertain audiences.

    THE IMPORTANT QUESTION

Every indie film you can mention off the top of your head had a big time producer from start to finish secretly planning and plotting the marketing of the film. Creating hype on your indie film just takes 3 main ingredients - 1. Money 2. Time 3. Good Product. I think what we all lack is money...

    Using film

When I visited panavision, I talked to a cinematographer there and he told me that the films grain mimics that of the human eye, while digital grain does not. Lately, when I wake up in the middle of the night, I pay attention to the natural grain the human eye creates, and he was right, in low...

    editing colour correction

Apple color is by far the closest thing you can get to what the pro's use. I shot my movie White Wall on HD (Panasonic HVX 200), and 35mm film (scanned 2k, scanned it myself) and color timed it using Color. I had a colorist, but his style was conflicting mine, so I had to do it. It was a lot of...
