That's definitely the most puzzling part. Especially as OP says this is a "payday" for the crew, I would imagine they could just pay the actor the going SAG rate, too. It's all very odd.

Not necessarily, it depends on the state. H44 is talking about "one party" laws. You can Google a list of states that allow it. Not that I recommend such a convoluted solution to what is va simple (though unfortunate) problem.
