Is It a Safe Bet to Buy a Used DSLR or Mirrorless/Hybrid-something for Video?

As someone who just finally hopped the DSLR wagon and bought a used $300 t2i with kit lens, I can say that it can be done. Like anything, you need to do your homework. I used eBay, they have a pretty good return policy if the seller misrepresented anything. So if the listing doesn't specify if...

How long does it take for you to save up for a shoot?

What I would give to be able to save up $8-10k in 6-8 months. Seriously, enjoy it while you can. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I agree 100% with Sweetie and Walter.

Agreed. Definitely not ideal. But they've worked well for me within my budget constraints.

    lighting need light socket advice

It would depend on what you're shooting on. RED or ARRI, no, a few 150w bulbs probably won't be enough light. Using a DSLR with good low-light? Should be plenty for the moody look you're going for. Maybe even more than you'd need, but that's good since you'll be able to use a lower ISO to expose...

    New modular cable dolly system

Looks cool. Just one question: how do you keep it from sagging in the middle?

I've got several of these. http://www.amazon.com/Hanging-Lantern-Cord-Off-Switch/dp/B007RPRYF0/ and have used them with very large china lanterns. My only complaint is that they don't secure on their own to the china lantern wire. I've had to use gaffer tape to get them on, and then the lamp...

Sell Any Movie - Keep 100% of Sales

Sounds like an awesome deal, and it's definitely about time someone tried 'giving the people what they want' so-to-speak, from a filmmaker perspective. Not surprised it's you, since you've been nothing but a cool dude on here. Best of luck, hope to be able to utilize the service one day!

How much could it cost to hire a VFX artist do to this?

Not a DP so I hadn't heard of the camera until recently when someone on another forum posted these pics. Shot with no lighting at 40,000 (not a typo) ISO. Obviously they had awesome glass, but still. http://i.imgur.com/LOZlOH0.png http://i.imgur.com/yA6UcRZ.png http://i.imgur.com/8XztjP8.png...

I feel like I keep showing up just to apologize. But yeah, had a rough week nursing and ultimately losing a feline member of our family (RIP Jacques), so I haven't had time to really work on anything. However, I hit it hard again today. Based on some suggestions here I decided to make a...

    Blacking out windows

Can you work it out that the windows aren't in the shot? If so, several layers of heavy-duty black trash bags will work just fine. Attach around the edges with gaffer tape.

Oh, no worries. If I were better at this sort of thing I would have made everything in wordpress and it wouldn't be an issue in the first place ;)

Oh yeah that's definitely an option. I can do that easily with my own web hosting. However we will lose the wix html5 design and back end. Unless we just want to do a redirect or mirror to the site(not as professional imho). Which will still have ads but at least we'll be able to have the...

    Is "mise-en-scène" bullshit?

I don't know, man. That academic double talk is making my head hurt. Is that what I missed by not going to film school? ;) When it comes down to it, I think that the term only matters as much as it matters to you. No one is going to call you out for not using it, or think you're less...

    Is "mise-en-scène" bullshit?

Because it doesn't make sense to discuss something that isn't there when analyzing what is. Because mise en scene is about the visuals. I'm not sure what you mean by this. I don't know about film school, but as far as I've encountered, people do discuss the individual elements as well...

Ok, so, consensus seems to lean toward the second one, with some doubts about the logo? I would say I agree with that. For now I'll remove the 'threads!' and focus on getting the site up and running with content. So, to start, imma copy and paste the old blog posts from the previous site into...

    help, film-life crisis.

I don't see where anyone was outright telling him to quit. Just that he should really think about and examine what he wants. If you can't motivate yourself to do something, it's time to self-examine and decide if it's what you want. That's not being discouraging, that's tough love. Though I...
