    What makes a movie funny?

There is no real formula to humor, however make humor often works when it makes the viewer feel superior to others, reduces the emotional impact of anxiety-provoking situations, or surprises the viewer. http://www.laughlab.co.uk/ did research into what makes a funny joke, and has interviews and...

archived-videos Action Showreel From My Film Group

15 seconds before a punch is thrown, kinda slow start for an action reel. The music is a little too low in energy for a collection of fight scenes. There isn't alot of variation in the fighting. Mostly looks like some punching, blocking, and the occasional kick. The fights feel fairly static as...

    Cast or Crew first?

We always put out notices for both at the same time and start recruiting for both once the project is a go. Usually the key members of the crew somehow get lined up before the first round of auditions, with PAs and misc crew usually on board just before filming.

Filming with a Treatment but no Script?

if you are going improv, try to have 2-3 cameras to make sure you get good coverage. If possible get camera ops who are quick on their feet and know the camera well. Make sure to have plenty of batteries for the cameras and extra memory cards. organize as best you can ahead of time on what you...

    Using curse words

It all depends on context. Write as you think they would talk and then adjust the level of profanity in the rewrites until you are happy with the results. Profanity or not, your script (like most scripts) will undergo a number of rewrites and adjustments. The main thing is to start writing and...

archived-videos Testing Explosion With After Effects

Looks good. A little large for a hand grenade. Ditto on adding in a little camera shake. Go a little tighter on the roto to have subtle light wrap from the explosion. If a few frames could see space between people and fire. Overall good job.

Do we encourage each other enough to keep trying?

AS with all things there needs to be a balance between encouragement against all odds and egging on someone who has no business anywhere near film. People with talent/skill and people just starting out who are still developing talent/skill need encouragement. People with no talent/skill or...

How many of you self-fund your first feature?

most everyone i know self funded their first feature. One or two people had friends/family give them the money. The only person I know of in the area that got funding from a studio for his first feature had been acting on a TV show for some 5-6 years and had made good connections.

editing Are short black screens a good thing to use in editing

Since you are doing the whole person behind the camera is there thing, I would add an effect as if they are switching off, then back on the camera. If you play it as that, then as a viewer we know time has passed.

    laptop or desktop

Keep with a desktop setup for actual production. If you can afford it, buy a cheap laptop/netbook for taking with you to meet clients or play around on while your main system renders. As an aside I recommend you keep your work computer and your personal computer as separate machines.

What do you think makes a good preview trailer?

The best capture the feel of the movie and convey the overall sense of the story without spoiling the plot. The trailer has to be true to movie it is previewing while still leaving the audience wanting more.
