    Hello Everyone

Nice work. Who would you say are your influences musically, and how are those influences incorporated into your work/style?

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

I re-watched the joker a few months ago by watching TAXI DRIVER and KING OF COMEDY. If you haven't already I'd watch these two amazing (yet tough to watch) films and see the influence they've had on the JOKER.

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Just watched the Altman documentary, ALTMAN on Prime. Made me realize how many Altman films (mostly those in the 90s and early 2000s), that I haven't seen. And how many from the 70s I have to re-watch (such as McCabe & Mrs Miller). Anyone have any Altman favorites, and why?

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

That's great. That's what I did. I wrote a script (actually a short film). Then expanded it to feature length. I was trying to get finance, and though it had some interest, things were moving way too slowly and I knew it still may never get made. Since most things never get made I got some...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

That's always been the hard thing. Getting people to watch or read your finished product. The music industry is no different. I've known tons of great bands that should have made it do nothing commercially, while many who had no talent do really well. The difference was usually based on...

archived-videos Tension - Title Sequence Practice

Agree. It's always interesting to discover what we thought was new is actually old. And then improved on through the years. Case in point, Tim Macmillan's time slice experiments, years before THE MATRIX. I guess Tim was in turn inspired by the classic work of Muybridge. I know I initially was...

Like you, I'm more concerned about people not wearing masks. It is annoying. If only everybody did then eventually the infection rate would be so low that even high risk things like going to the theatre, cinema, conventions, pubs and basically anything indoors would be relatively fine as there'd...

archived-videos Do I have a future in editing?

    1. It's way, way too long. 2. Pick a better speech - this isn't motivational 3. Sound has issues - needs to be cleaned up 4. Shot selects are a little odd (un-motivational at times). If this is just an edit experiment you've given yourself, that's great. But to see how well you can edit, what...

budget Soon doing our first paid gig, no idea what price to ask for.

I agree. I used to direct promos (years ago) but now people do them for next to nothing. Mainly to get attention - either to a post production studio or a director looking to increase his visibility - and to hopefully move into the more lucrative commercials market. That's what I did. So to...

film-school Do I need film school?

Also depends on what type of filmmaker you want to be. Some film schools train you to be a industry standard filmmaker/technician. They teach you how to work within a studio setting. Plus some have direct connections with industry (with studios, production houses, internships). That's important...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

Sure, here's our website - and library of films so far. http://filmfestdistribution.com/our-library/ As for shorts, we've done a couple of compilations but shorts aren't really our focus. Whoever you sign up with to distribute your work though, do check and see if and how they deduct expenses.

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

Hi I think you're confusing distribution with streaming services (or as they used to say, broadcast). That's like thinking a cinema or TV channel is a distributor. We're primarily a distribution company (and international sales agent), so our films may eventually find their way to the actual...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

Insane to you I guess, but it worked for us perfectly. It worked for the crew, the actors and most importantly for the script. Before I wrote the script I listed the limitations I set myself (few actors, limited location, limited shooting days, natural light and, later I decided, no dialogue)...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

You have to ask yourself tough questions, like why would they watch a film I recommended? I often tell my friends about great films to watch and they likewise tell me about their faves. But rarely do we ever watch these personal recommendations. I, on the other hand, buy and watch films that are...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

You're right about the naive part - but we all start there, knowing nothing. That's why I'm all for people being open about the business. Once you understand the business and the limits of the business you have a clearer understanding of how to best make and promote/sell your film. Since units...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

It is tough. What filmmakers don't understand is that even with a distributor it doesn't mean people will watch their film, like you point out. What really helps is when the filmmakers work with the distributor hand in hand in marketing the film. Take an online merchant for example. Say you get...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

Thanks. Shot the film over 5 years. Didn't do much to it for a year (as I was too busy with work and life - you know how that is!). Then last year finally edited it. This year did some clean-up work, visual effects and now the score. Brought my old sampling keyboard out of the garage. Of course...

Strange times - easier to make movies harder to make money from them

Tell me about it! Even for the smallest of films, if they're lucky enough to get any press, that same exposure leads to tons of online piracy. Just happened to a film we're distributing right now. Suddenly it's everywhere. And by "everywhere" I mean pirate websites. The good thing is that there...
