    Dear Newbies

If you ask that question about a movie you don't personally like you're probably just going to frustrate yourself to the point of madness. Personally I try to study scripts for films I liked and try to get a sense of why they worked for other people, too.

    Fascinating Video On Marketing

That sounds reasonable, although I don't think it should necessarily follow that just because you have the capacity to fund a film that you should have the capacity to fund people who can promote it the way it might need to be promoted. Personally in the end I just want to be able to tell...

    Art of forgiving

Anything that gets you off the ground and working is a success just for being able to do that. It's a solid idea, so just run with it.

    The Future of Film

That sounds about right to me. I miss video stores to a certain degree. I believe Richmond VA's Fan Video is still in business though. In the end though it's impossible to predict right down to the letter what's going to happen. We can guess and wind up being right to a certain degree, but I...

What’s so great about twist endings?

I like a nice plot twist, but more often than not they feel tacked on and completely unnecessary. The problem is when one movie comes out and does it well, you get fifty (so it seems) movies after that trying to do the same thing and failing miserably.

    Greetings!

Welcome, man! You've definitely come to the right place!

Jobs for screenwriters (with a bachelors)?

Very true. I should probably still go to college for something, but it's nice to know that as a writer I still have a good enough chance (well as good as it's ever gonna get) in the field.

    How is my writing?

I thought it was a perfectly decent bit of writing. The only suggestions I can think of would mirror most of what Nick said, and the bulk of that is just nit-picky stuff. It certainly wasn't a waste of time. There's no reason in the world why you shouldn't try your hand at a screenplay. It's one...

Dreams on Spec - screenwriting doc

I'll definitely check this out when I get on an internet connection that isn't satellite with a limited bandwidth. Lord knows I'm depressed enough about my career as it is, but this sounds like pretty essential viewing.

    Writing a comedy...

This is just an idea, but maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to stick to your strengths for now, and perhaps try to find an occasional comedic moment within the scripts you get out of those strengths. You can build up an idea of what works for you comedy-wise without creating...

    Walk the Walk

Someone already mentioned the title, but that's one of the best examples of real time I can think of. And I remember it being a pretty good movie, too. Quite frankly I envy anyone who can wrap a good story around that concept. For some reason I just can't seem to do it.

    Hello from California

Certain parts of California were very wonderful for me. I'd like to go back to those places sometime. Welcome!

    From play to screenplay!?

Agreed. It's usually just a question of adding whatever touches are needed to give the film script enough of a cinematic feel to distinguish it from the stage version. Sometimes that can just be a matter of a couple extra scenes and some minor changes to dialog and character, and sometimes it...

    cinematography Shooting a fight scene

Rehearsal is a must. I got a role in a prison movie based on my tiny little bit of professional wrestling experience (I guess they assumed I would know how to bump, and I do) for a somewhat complicated fight scene, and the other actor and I really didn't get a lot of time to rehearse. We worked...

    Christmas is over Dang it!

Boy that would make for an interesting film. (Shudders in terror) Heh.

Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like "Avatar"?

Nope. I thought it sucked on toast. Visual power does not always make up for a boring, insanely derivative story and unremarkable performances. I understand a lot of people liked it, and that's cool. It's all preference. I just really didn't like the damn thing at all.

    Animation script

I don't see how it would be a whole lot different from a live action script, but Lord knows I could be very, very wrong in that thought. I guess the best thing to do would be to search through some script websites and read published some published screenplays of famous films. I'm sure there's...
