    Old Film Look

I'd shoot 16mm reversal, either Kodachrome 40 or Ecktachrome 100D. The 40 is only available on 100 loads and the 100D comes in 400' loads. Scott

    Filming Rights for news programs

Also, if you notice, many times with stories like this they exclude the person's face so that they can't be identified. And never show kids without signed parent or guardian persmission. Scott

    Documentary tips

Not to to be negative, but what you're asking for is a filmmaking education that would take years to learn and some of it is artistic decisions which only you can make. I'd take a class/classes in production, start reading some books and watching documentaries. There's almost no way you...

    Headphone/Lighting Kit questions

    A. Just get a decent pair of headphone. Don'ty spend more than $100, but they should cover your entire ear. Not earbuds or $10 walkman style headphones. B. There's no such thing as an all inclusive lighting kit unless you're talking about a 5 ton grip truck with lights. Not knowing your...

    Where to buy equipment???

The two places above are great. Before you buy any gear on-line, go to www.resellerrating.com. They have tons of feedback from people who've bought stuff and rate the sellers. B&H and EVS get high ratings. Some cheap sellers have really bad ratings. Remember if it looks too good to be true...

Limited Budget which camera should I get?

Go for the DVX100A and use the extra cash for extra batteries, a tripod and some lights. Both cameras handle color well. I think the DVX has more control over video settings. Scott

Advise on how to start a video production company

Start small and keep it simple. Shoot live events and edit them. Unless you're rich, don't go for an office and the extras that come with it. (Unless your house is a mess, then get some space.) Make sure you have money for advertising. Treat it like a business. Don't jump on any job, make...

shooting-film Prices on super 16 and post

I've gotten it as low as 9.5 cents per foot, but that was at Crest who closed their doors about a year ago. Now I get .12 at Fotokem and that's with prep for telecine. Fuji film comes in at around .25 per foot which makes a 400' roll come in at $100. Try indie--post.com for transfers. Scott

Tough call. I'd say offer $100 for the day for an inexperience DP. Don't go for a totaly newbie because you'll get what you paid for. Scott

    shooting-film 35mm: Cost?

I just shot a $350,000 HD feature with the Varicam and for fun I did a Super-16 budget and it came in between $15,000-20,000 (depending on some different variables) more than the Varicam budget. In the end they needed some extra cameras and we decided not to go that route. Super-16 has made...

    Blind Date vs. CSI Miami

"CSI: Miami" and "24" are shot on 35mm film with Panavision cameras. The cameras are over $100,000 a piece. The crew has years of professional experience. Each episode probably cost between 1.5 to 2 million each, so trying to match that look with an under $5000 video camera and a budget of...

    Which camera is the best

Check out the Panasonic DVX100A. 24P is the way to go if you think you want to go to the big screen. The XL2 is a good option, but I still lean toward the the DVX100A. Scott

    Director+Producer=Good Movie????

The producer's role is to be as supportive of the director as the budget will allow. They should guide the production's logistics so the director can focus on directing. Sometimes they have to save the director from themselves. That's when the director tries to do something that will look...

    First Look - Panasonic HD

I just read that the price of an 8 gig card has dropped to around $1400 which is much less that the price of $4000 I heard earlier. Now that's just a rumor, but I wouldn't be surprised if the prices dropped. Scott
