Which format? DV? HD? 16mm? super 16?

I'm a huge film fan (I own a Super-16 camera package), but unless you can more than double your budget, then you should consider HD or HDV because child actors can be film eaters. You could luck out and get the next Haley Joel Osment, but don't plan on it. Scott

    Sony XDCAM HD Cine Alta...

Right now 4gig P2 cards are around $650, just for the record. For archiving, the suggestion is to dump your footage into a computer from the P2 cards and then burn DVDs of the footage for backups. With the present DVD storage capabilities, that's a lot of DVDs if you go uncompressed. When...

    LA Film

One advantage to school is access. Access to gear that you don't have to buy. Access to crew in the form of your fellow students. Access to technical and artistic advisors who are your instructors. In the LA Film School, you have access to industry professionals with things like Emmy and...

    Sony XDCAM HD Cine Alta...

The XDcam is an interesting camera. I think Sony is aiming it at News and Corporate video. The disks are around $30 a pop. They are random access and you can record over them. Plus you can delete bad takes in the camera. It could be a good tool for indie filmmakers. I like the idea of...

    Getting a cemetery set?

Landing a cemetery to shoot in is not all that hard. I shot many a student film in them. Follow the normal rules and be respectful. One thing to avoid is featuring names on tombstones in shots. Scott

editing Good AND Easy Editing Program? Need Help!

Another option is Premiere Elements 2.0 . It's a scaled down version of Premiere which runs around $100 or if you buy a firewire card ($50-70) sometimes they throw it in. It has %60-70 of the features of the full blown version and look easy to learn. I think you can download a demo version to...

    Do the heads need cleaning?

Is this tape on a tape stock that you usually use? People recommend that you use certain tape stocks for cameras because of the type of lubrication, i.e. dry vs. wet, so perhaps that is the problem. Try the tape in a different playback machine or bring in the camera it was shot with a...

    Indie Film Tech Tip: Slating

Hey Folks, I was shooting a film project two weekends back and had to educate one of our crew members on the slate, so that's where this tip was born. When you break it down, there are lots of little procedures which are all shown in this video clip. This tip can apply to shooting video too...

    editing Varicam HD offline workflow?

I just talked to a editor buddy who cut on an AVID system using Varicam footage down converter to Mini-DV. He was terrified that it was going to be a nightmare, but he saved a CMX EDL on his AVID which was imported into FInal Cut Pro and the EDL conversion program (I don't know if it's part of...

    Shooting "Live Evil"

My Eclair seems like a friendly little guy. I love the Super-16 aspect. I bought it for "Horrors of War" hoping to use it for 2nd unit, but it needed some tweaking before it was ready for duty. Scott

    archived-videos Rubble

Good job. I thought it was a nice little dramatic short. The lighting and camerawork was over all very good. There was one shot of the woman, that looked rushed. It was early on when she stands up into a close-up. I think that some of the color shifting is distracting. Maybe it's just me...

    Shooting "Live Evil"

I spent the weekend shooting the openings scene for the horror movie "Live Evil". It's the first outing for my Super-16 Eclair ACL and it mostly went well. (I did have one mag jam, as I'm still learning the finer points of loading the mags.) The shoot went well because I was surrounded by a...

    reservist deployed making 1rst documentary

First, be safe while shooting. Sounds like you're looking for a voice or point of view. Ask yourself what you want to say and then start interviewing people with questions that get you to that point of view. If you want to show the day-to-day life of a grunt or why the soldier fight, think of...

    shooting-film Your favorite 16mm film.

Fuji 250T. If I were asked to pick one stock to shoot a film this would be the one because it can handle just about anything. I've shot day exteriors (not by choice, but because the idiot producer was lazy and just ordered one stock instead of the three I picked. I used with ND filters)...

    Which college to choose?

There is no specific formula for getting a film/video education. Some are self taught. Others do the school route and go either 2 or 4 years. I like to say, it's what you bring to the table that matters. I did the four year school thing. I felt that it made me more well rounded because...
