Which is better Audacity or HitFilm? - Sound editing

Whilst true, I disagree mostly when it comes to software like Audacity. Personally I’d rather use Resolve (which also happens to be free) than Audacity. I’d prefer to use Media Composer or FCPXs audio tools than Audacity. They’re not necessarily anything special (though they’re certainly not...

    A Mass Exedus From Adobe

Upgraded my Maxes a little over 12 months ago. Didnt install any Adobe software for the first time ever. I use Pro Tools & Media Composer. Was doing a part time course so snagged them at educational prices (perpetual) and now pay a yearly fee to access all upgrades - the best part is the...

    Question on Westworld filming

It’s quite possible the drama type scenes are single camera, however it wouldn’t be uncommon for a TV drama to shoot two camera cross coverage in drama scenes. HBO shows do have time and budget luxuries that others don’t... All on film too

How do I get an entry level position?

Hustle. Call up productions companies every day. Find out what’s shooting and send emails every day. Find out who makes commercials near you and call them up if that’s all you can find locally. Find people on LinkedIn and message them on there. If you’re serious about pursuing a career in the...

    The Apple Store for Help?

Personally, I’m not sure that playing your project to the guy or girl at the Apple Genius Bar is the most effective way of getting creative feedback...

lighting Light Meter Apps Any Good Ones Or Garbage?

Buy a real light meter. An app will never be particularly accurate, and will only ever be able to give you spot metering anyway unless you buy an accessory (which you can get a second-hand meter for a similar price to the better light meter accessories)

Voiceover - Is it ever a good idea?

I just watched Molly’s game which uses VO quite well IMO. There’s a time and place for everything. As long as you don’t use it as a crutch for exposition, I think it can work fine.

    Is written sound ok?

First one is more concise and paints the picture better IMO. Unless the ‘whoop’ is extremely important to the scene/story id just leave it as siren.

    Dream list on a budget

Depends. What are you shooting? What do you personally want to do? What do you want to do with the equipment?

How to travel with backpack & suitcase?

Honestly I find pelican cases to be too heavy and bulky if I’m doing something in the middle of nowhere. If you don’t have access to power and a home base etc. then I want to be as light as possible. Equipment insurance sounds like it could be your friend as well, if you’re super concerned...

cinematography ND filter and other filters - enhancement baked onto image?

Most colour and polarising filters (among many others) also require an exposure adjustment as they cut light (again, the nature of a filter), so your depth of field will often be different. Not sure if that’s included in the ‘100% same’ criterion or simply just the look. I’ve pulled out colour...

cinematography ND filter and other filters - enhancement baked onto image?

I’ve done this exact test using one Arri Amira and swapping filters in and out. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, but it depends on the specific filter as to how different. Theoretically a high quality ND/IRND shouldn’t affect the image much if at all other than to limit the amount of light...

How to travel with backpack & suitcase?

When travelling to remote areas, that's when your luxuries have to take a back seat. For example, if you're camping out in the jungles of Africa, maybe the realities of the location mean you can't take your follow focus and cage and rods and shoulder mount and external monitor and gimbal. These...

Deciding on the color grading before or after a shoot?

Most productions decide on a particular look in pre-pro. That’s how the DP knows what to capture & how to capture it. Part of your pre would be developing a LUT to approximate what a grade would look like later on that is then applied on set to give everyone a rough idea of the final look. You...

    editing Overexposed footage

Check your waveform. There might be some detail in the highlights depending on how you’ve captured it. There might be just enough to bring it back into a picture you’re happier with. If not, I say roll with it and make it a creative decision. Push the colours a bit and call it a creative choice.

Any idea on how to make a replica of a cubicle at home?

Does it have to be a cubicle specifically? If not, you could quite easily set dress to make a room look like an office. Alternately shoot in location or you can buy those office partitions that are like freestanding walls that you might be able to afford and make use of.

    The Disaster Artist

Every person with an opinion is a potential paying audience member. Listening to and valuing everyone's opinions on what makes a movie that they like to see and contrasting that with your own tastes is what makes you a more financially successful filmmaker. Roger Ebert might be telling me to...

cinematography Who plays the greater role in determining how a film is shot - the director or DP?

I actually think the background of an experienced editor would be less likely to ‘screw up’ camera positioning as they know in their head what works in the edit. I’d suggest a Director who knows what kind of shots will go together well (in collaboration with a good DoP of course) should (in...
