When do you know you should give up?

IMO, when it comes to film, 100% in marketing effort is absolutely required. 90% likely will result in failure and eventual badmouthing of the whole marketing process. There's no shades of grey in marketing success. You go all in.

    Assistant Editor not responding...

This is the biggest story in this entire thread. Why would you do this in the first place? Anyway, good luck.

What are distributors doing for indie today?

The cost to go via createspace has dropped considerably. I wrote about that in another thread on distribution. They now allow you to upload your film -- but they've a bunch of "gotcha" rules that that they tell you about after you've waited for it to get processed (months), then you've got to...

legal - using celebrity footage in film

You "can" because he's a public figure without expectations of privacy, however there a lot of hairs to split, with the biggest one being 'can you make money off his image in your film'? This depends and your next step is an entertainment lawyer.

Copyright Issues with shooting inside a bar?

Yep, you've have to take the posters down for sure. Turn the neon lights off or block and make sure no bottle labels are facing the camera.

When do you know you should give up?

This is a worthy point. Having done one genre, I'm exploring options with a higher conversion rate without losing my initial audience.

a little insecure question to film makers/directors

I believe I have 4 credited cast members 5'2 or under. As a low budget filmmaker, height is way down on my priority list. I look for 1) ability to show up on time and 2) ability to give a convincing performance being fed lines by the director. Yes, if you answered my craigslist cast call...

What is the best way to find extras? And do you need to pay them a fortune?

No, it's not. Are you being professional about it? Do you have a film website? Let us check it out to see if it's professional enough to attract anyone to come and work on your film.

When do you know you should give up?

Wrongola! Marketing is a whole other industry in itself. You have to jump in 100%! No half-a$$ed attempts will succeed. Only a few are successful because the others are NOT marketing with 100% effort. A few words of advice: 1) Proper marketing takes more time/effort than making your film...

When do you know you should give up?

Marketing. You're not doing enough of it. That is why the 'other guys' get more views.

This is why one doesn't go half ass when it comes to editing equipment. Think about the wasted hours (weeks!, months!) when a "variable" shows up unexpectedly. Good luck.

    Advice on equipment investments

If you're asking these questions, perhaps you've not taken full advantage of your tiny starting kit. Have you gone out and shot a lot of footage and edited them into shorts? Shown them to anyone? Were they entertained? If you haven't done this or been honing your skills with what you have...

Question About A 1.5M Budgeted Film

Yes, it can be done, but it requires thinking outside the box and this especially includes ignoring regular Hollywood conventions re: director, DP, crew, et al., and gear. You'll need to find a name actor or two willing to work under unconventional conditions. You can't afford to babysit...
