[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Witcher” Season 3, Episodes 6-8, including the ending.] For anyone reading this in advance of watching Season 3, fair warning: “The Witcher” does not give Henry Cavill a fitting send-off. It doesn’t give him a send-off at all, in fact. If you were a casual fan who only watches TV for fun — rather than searching for reviews, news, and analysis (like this!) before and after every season — then you’d have no idea you just saw the last of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia. Geralt will return in Season 4, he just won’t be played by Cavill. Liam Hemsworth (no, not that Hemsworth, or that other Hemsworth — this Hemsworth) will don the White Wolf’s white wig, in a bit of mid-series...
Viola Davis won’t begin filming her new movie “G20” until the actors strike is resolved, despite receiving a SAG-AFTRA waiver that would have allowed production to take place. In a statement provided to Deadline, Davis explained why she and her partners at JuVee Productions decided to halt work on the film. “I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike,” David said. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA.” “G20” is a thriller that stars Davis as an American president who is forced to deal with terrorists overtaking the G20 summit. The film will be...
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has created a massive surge in public interest in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer. But the atomic bomb inventor’s grandson wants to make sure the cultural phenomenon doesn’t obscure the facts. In a new interview with Time, Charles Oppenheimer shared his thoughts about Nolan’s cinematic take on his grandfather’s life. While he praised the film as a whole, Charles took particular issue with a scene in which J. Robert Oppenheimer attempts to kill a professor with a cyanide-laced apple. The story is featured in Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” on which Nolan based his screenplay. But Charles Oppenheimer disputed the...
“Futurama” is coming back in the very near future. Season 11 of the beloved Emmy-winning adult animated series debuts on Hulu after 10 years off the air. “Futurama” premiered in 1999 and was later canceled in 2003. The show later returned in four TV movies from 2008 to 2009, which were split into episodes and count as individual seasons. Comedy Central revived the show in 2010 before it was canceled in 2013. After a brief 10-year hiatus, “Futurama” has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact. The 10 all-new episodes of Season 11 have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long...
For queer pop culture fanatics, Netflix’s “Glamorous” is the gift that keeps on giving. Beyond the homages to everything from “9 to 5” and “Clue” (including a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to Jade’s infamous Cover Girl commercial on “America’s Next Top Model”) and an early aughts party so dead-on it will induce vertigo in viewers of a certain age, there’s also Miss Benny’s wardrobe as assistant Marco, newly hired at Glamorous by Madolyn as Madolyn Addison’s assistant. (Even the name of Kim Cattrall’s character feels like a reference to Meryl Streep’s Madeline Ashton in gay cult classic “Death Becomes Her.”) A gender-nonconforming queer man, Marco begins as a struggling makeup vlogger and ends in full glam, complete with a...
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age. First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing. Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation. The Pitch: Pregnancy Really Suits Arnold Schwarzenegger It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a movie star in possession of a comically large body, must be in want of a comically small scene partner. Every muscular action star eventually reaches a point when it’s time to pivot to comedy — and nothing smoothes that transition quite like a pint-sized...
It’s the shock of seeing Norman Bates, knife in hand, clad in his mother’s clothes, grinning maniacally in the swinging lamplight. It’s a supposedly dead husband rising from a bathtub with terrifying saucer contact-lenses. It’s finally connecting “I see dead people” with Bruce Willis being shot at the beginning of “The Sixth Sense.” When movies pull the rug out from under us, it’s one of the greatest thrills that cinema can provide. As Hollywood continues to reboot countless old properties, it’s easy to think that the days of original and surprising storytelling are long behind us. But these films prove that Hollywood still has a few tricks up its sleeve, ones that have kept us talking for years, and have cemented their place in film...

Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Full Circle” Episodes 5 and 6. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind — even if it brings things full circle. The final episodes of Max’s “Full Circle” from Steven Soderbergh and Ed Solomon reveal a broken cycle of violence, greed, and secrecy that does not ultimately heal from retaliation, but resolution/healing/absolution. “Full Circle” stars a large ensemble, but the Mahabir side especially spotlights key players at different times. If Episodes 1 and 2 belonged to Aked (Jharrel Jerome), then 3 and 4 were focused on Louis (Gerald Jones) and 5 and 6 spotlight Xavier (Sheyi Cole). Each member of the young crew tasked with doing Savitri’s (CCH Pounder) bidding...

Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover are attached to write the Disney+ Star Wars limited series “Lando,” based on the iconic Lando Calrissian character, IndieWire has confirmed. “Haunted Mansion” director and “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien was previously attached to write “Lando” back when it was first revealed to be in the works in 2020, but Simien is no longer involved with the project. Glover portrayed a young Lando in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in 2018, taking over from Billy Dee Williams, who originated the role in “The Empire Strikes Back.” The “Atlanta” creator has been vocal about returning to the role, but it’s unclear at present if he’s attached to star. “We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say...
When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first introduced in 1984, comic book creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird set out to skewer the superhero stories then dominating the space (sound familiar?), piling on the parody (teenage…mutant…ninja…turtles?) and (oopsie!) crafting their own unexpected hit heroes in the process. Over the course of nearly four decades, those wily heroes have cycled through countless iterations, eventually becoming a favorite for kids (of all ages) and spawning their very own entertainment complex. So, has this all been done before? Thankfully, no. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” the latest entry into the half-shell canon, is another fresh, funny animated outing that breathes serious new life...
The show must go on, as they say in the theater — but what if it’s held up by murder? “Only Murders in the Building” returns August 8 with a new murder — and a new building, after Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) dropped dead on stage in the Season 2 finale. The Season 3 trailer shows Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) teaming up once again to solve a deadly crime that hits too close to home — though Uma (Jackie Hoffman) thanks them for at least keeping the corpse out of the building this time. For the victim this time is not just another Arconia resident, but a famous actor starring in what was supposed to be Oliver’s triumphant Broadway return. Now he has to debut a career-saving show while the death of...
