The least expensive mic I could suggest is a Shure SM57 retailing new at around $90 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/270102/ They are very reliable and are commonly used in broadcast situations... ie it's the two mics on the US presidential podium. I have three.

I would avoid DATs at all cost personally... they're just out dated...I don't even think they're made anymore... I would preferr to record to laptop with a nice sound interface like an Edirol FA-101 or 66... For my current project I lugged my DAW around and used my aardvark Q10 ...DAT's can only...

honestly for sub $500... shoot S-VHS like a panasonic AG-450 (the AGDVC7 is the miniDV equivilent) and run it through an analog to firewire video converter later. should be doable for around $200 then invest in a decient mic. Or you can do what I did...it would require access to a computer...
