action If it can't show on screen, it shouldn't be in your script

The trouble is: I can go back through my script (as you suggest) but I still don't know what is and isn't allowed to be expressed with an accompanying emotion (even in facial expressions or actions e.g. "look of disbelief" or "threw it away angrily"). Does anyone know a good article or book...

action If it can't show on screen, it shouldn't be in your script

I seem to have offended you - many apologies - definitely not my intention. Neither am I trying to win an argument but to gain understanding. Specifically, I'm trying to understand what can and can't be written in a script in terms of emotion. Is a "look of disbelief" okay or not (as my example...

action If it can't show on screen, it shouldn't be in your script

Yes. This is where I get stuck too. I'm trying to convey an emotion so I write it in alongside an action (as per my take on the Suzie example). But that seems to break the rule... In your case, I might have written: she stares at the clock in disbelief. But even that may break the rule (even...

action If it can't show on screen, it shouldn't be in your script

Looking at 3a - I might write it as: Kim steps close to Suzie but Suzie, who doesn't like people so close, immediately backs up a step. Would that break the "rule"? I just wonder whether the motivation for the action can be included because it gives something for the actor/director to work on...

    screenwriter memes

I once ordered a book about poisons through the local library for my murder thriller. Not sure but by the look on the librarians face, I'm on a list somewhere and my wife has had more regular appointments at the doctors...

Anyone got any success with applying to ISA writing gigs?

Thanks for your thoughts, "unknown". Your views pretty much reflect my own. I just wondered if there were enough people with a good experience with ISA that might make it worth a fling. As far as my writing is concerned, when people actually read my scripts, I usually get very positive...

Anyone got any success with applying to ISA writing gigs?

Just wondered whether anyone has had scripts read/optioned/sold through ISA? I've used Inktip before and had a few script-read requests and one option but it took a long time and went nowehere. So is ISA any better?

No - I was just expanding a bit....

plot Lots of "beginning", lots of "middle" ... no "end"

I have never, ever, EVER accepted "Write what you know" as a writing motto. It should be and always be "WRITE WHAT YOU CAN IMAGINE". Otherwise every story would be autobiographical (and, if it's my life: very boring). "WRITE WHAT YOU CAN IMAGINE" is another way of saying "What if...?"

plot Lots of "beginning", lots of "middle" ... no "end"

It may help to see "real life" stories as a series of triumphs or defeats or turning points. Any one of those can be your ending esp. if you make it dramatic (i.e. put the exact opposite outcome as a strong possibility before the true outcome wins out). Triumphs can be getting the girl/guy, the...

    Script Help

Something else to think about... Another thought occurred on this - budget. As everyone will tell you on this forum, selling scripts ain't easy. I get the most interest for my scripts which are "contained" (one room/location only) and have few actors (one preferably but ocassionally they'll...

    Script Help

It's a script, Jim but not as we... Ok, we have a scientist trying to open a portal which he then does by accident. He captures an alien and then his alien friends come looking for him. Scientist gets abducted through the portal to an alien world where he meets a native who explains that the...
