This brought to mind The Rock (Michael Bay, 1996). For me, it rises above the normal blockbuster thriller because the antagonist is a hero, is called a hero throughout and believes he is doing the right thing

if you want to make the audience sympathetic to a character i think their failure to resolve a problem early on, which returns again to them later (but with heightened stakes) is a good device to use. edit - it can also offer a sense of full circle to the script i believe, a kind of closure...

Filmy, how about starting a thread on it? that way when ever someone goes 'oooh, that sounds great' you don't have to start again with them - its all up there for them to see. we could post questions on the thread and you could answer them on the thread. its time for that thread, oh guru...
