Hey Newbs - STOP BUYING CAMERAS!

You are correct my friend. I am biased towards cinematography as that is my career focus, however I am also talking about filmmaking in general. And generally speaking, it's not a good idea to tackle everything yourself. There are plenty of talented writers out there, so why not get a proper...

Hey Newbs - STOP BUYING CAMERAS!

You mean the first babysteps into indy filmmaking. But you'd be surprised what some first timers manage to do in their first efforts.... even beginner filmmakers these days have watched dozens ( maybe hundreds )of films before they even pick up a camera so they're not clueless. But if you want...

Hey Newbs - STOP BUYING CAMERAS!

If the idea is to learn filmmaking you should not use a cell phone even if you are a newbie. Save a bit of money and hire a half decent camera, if you're a student you might even get a generous discount from the rental house. A 7 year old filmmaking camera will teach you more than a 2016 4K...

Hey Newbs - STOP BUYING CAMERAS!

So everyone here seems keen to embrace the cell phone for films. Okay. But don't expect the cinema crew to ever take you seriously. And these are the people making films for a living by the way.

    Putting things in perspective...

It's interesting how the actors gave it a certain intensity and realism that simply drew you in. I still think name actors are overpaid... but good actors certainly make all the difference.

    Putting things in perspective...

The script is actually quite simple, almost everything happens on the one location... I was actually a bit shocked to learn their budget was so high. Would not be surprised if most of the budget went to marketing and distribution. A big chunk for the cast as well.

    Putting things in perspective...

The original title was indeed " Festen " but IMDb does list it as " The Celebration ". What you end up watching on YouTube is an entirely different matter depending on what language it was translated to. I watched in Spanish so go figure!

    Putting things in perspective...

I just watched a 1998 Film called " The Celebration ". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8nSgxvBrhQ I must admit I did watch it out of curiosity because someone else posted a link to it on a different thread on this forum. The film managed to hold my attention beginning to end ( a rare feat )...

Is a Sony F3 worthwhile buying in 2015??

It's over $300 a day to hire an Odyssey 7Q+ last time I checked... and the PIX240i is similarly priced. So I opted for the external recorder because I think lenses are easier ( and sometimes cheaper ) to hire, and if there is a budget, probably would prefer to hire a cinema lens anyway. I agree...

Is a Sony F3 worthwhile buying in 2015??

Yah, a lot of dirt cheap external recorders are showing up on ebay, but some of them are HDMI only. The Shogun looks good, but I've heard the Atomos screens crack easily and also I don't think the Shogun can do 10 bit ProRes 4444 . If it could... I would reconsider, although the PIX240 can also...

Is a Sony F3 worthwhile buying in 2015??

You do have to if you want to get the most out of your F3... but most of us end up hiring of course... but for me, I did not upgrade to a Cinealta camera to end up with 4:2:0 8 bit ... so I opted for an external recorder, the PIX240i. It will allow me to do 10 bit ProRes 422 and even 4444...

Is a Sony F3 worthwhile buying in 2015??

Okay, I see. But I meant accessories, which don't go down in price as much. Things like a good mattebox, follow focus gear, SxS cards, EVF, etc. Just the universal base plate I want ( Zacuto ) is about $700 AU, and it is assumed you've got a solid tripod. Otherwise, add $1000. Things get...

Is a Sony F3 worthwhile buying in 2015??

I've never seen an F3 for under $4000 AU, so if you got yours for $1500 I hope it was in okay condition and not with a million hours on it. Also important to realize that the F3, like most other "affordable" cinema cameras needs to be rigged. And sometimes this is the most expensive part...

    Anyone selling a shoot35 SGpro 35mm adapter?

I've got the SG Blade, which is basically an updated SGPro. Fully Functional, except that it's missing some parts on the rail support system.
