Looking for advice (Another film school thread)

For feature and TV productions in Canada, Vancouver or Toronto are the places to be. Vancouver is crazily expensive though: rent is higher, so too buying a place ($1.2m for a small townhouse, about 21x the average salary). Toronto is expensive as well but about 30% or more cheaper than...

I finished my screenplay but now I need some help

There are also various screenplay review companies you can use. Also some screenplay contests include some degree of feedback for free as part of the entry fee - the Bluecat Screenplay contest is one of those. That feedback can be very hit or miss though. Personally I know a lot of...

    Question about hiring a proofreader.

You have lots of good advice from the folks above. For honest and constructive script feedback I can highly recommend: http://reelauthors.com/ ... Note I do plenty of work for them. They will be honest though so if you decide to use them expect honest feedback - if they do not like your...

Power source- extra batteries or something else?

Yep, I have 8x Canon batteries on set with 2x double rechargers and 1x single recharger - all on set. The Canon DSLR with battery grip takes 2x batteries. Our SmallHD field monitor takes another 2x. I also bring an AC adapter along for the SmallHD field monitor just in case...

Advice on recorder to use with Sound Devices 302

Great advice AudioPostExpert, thanks. I monitor the audio so when a mower/shower starts, neighbor calls out etc I merely stop the take and wait for quiet to return. It can be a 30 second wait or hours... So for all my "ruined" audio I actually still get at least a few good takes as well...

Advice on recorder to use with Sound Devices 302

The biggest issue is the fact I am behind the camera and working on audio at the same time, so cannot boom. I wear one of those Petrol audio bags with my 302, Tascam, wireless receiver etc inside. I monitor the audio as I film. If the scene is fixed, I boom the mic (Audio-Technica AT4053B - we...

Audio: Lavs on bras - avoiding talent's heart beat

I had much fun and games on a recent shoot. Due to the micro budget nature of our shoots, I wear both the DOP and 'audio guy' hats. I am not an audio pro, but am learning as much as I can about the art. Our female talent was in lingerie for a short scene. We could not boom - it was a one...

Advice on recorder to use with Sound Devices 302

Audio, audio, audio... With two micro budget shorts and features now under my belt, I can attest to what Alcove and APE et al regularly say: capturing good audio is key to your production and is difficult. It's far more difficult than capturing the visuals. We have had countless scenes ruined...

    Rating my screenplay

Stopped after the first page. Your dialogue is far to on-the-nose. Read these articles: How to Write Great Dialogue Expositional Dialogue 'On-the-nose' Dialogue You likely need guidance on your entire script. First scripts are always tough - there is a very steep learning curve. Do not...

How long does it take for you to save up for a shoot?

Personally I would 100% not do that. Our first shorts (and features actually) were ultra low budget affairs. Basically we gained a huge amount of experience. One short was excellent, the rest just okay. Now we are hiring great locations for reasonable sums on Airbnb, and our shorts are...

    I just need verification...

Does not do it for me. If you plan on trying to sell the screenplay, the concept would be a very tough sell. If you want to direct yourself: go ultra-low budget, and see if you can write something that you could pull off in a very small number of locations - ideally one.
