    The Hollywood Look?

Perhaps it's the age old conundrum of "what makes the cinematic look"? For me the difference is framing, colour and lighting, which I obsess over. Frame rates and shutter angles are all rules that have been broken without losing the look and feel. Even aspect ratio can be flexible. Watching a...

[Mar 5] What are you working on this week?

Little different: docu-drama series on fetish subcultures. Felt out of my depth at first, but the people are wonderful.

    The Hollywood Look?

Cheers for the advice. I know the importance of sound, but its never been something I've worked with, I only do cinematography. My go to sound guy is moving on, so I'm trying to build up a skills set just in case i don't find anyone else up to his talent (at the same cost).

    Translating to digital

Hi everyone, sorry I've been away for a while. Had yet another baby, etc. And to business. I'm currently hunting down some cine/movie footage filmed by my grandad in the late 20s and 1930s, some from as far away as Australia. What should I keep in mind regarding preservation of the film, and...

    The Hollywood Look?

What do you make of the idea of recording ambient sounds and frequencies on location separately where possible to later add in, rather than silent background? I'm a sound idiot, so not even sure if this is a good question

    The Hollywood Look?

Loving El Director's advice, especially re: making a camera bigger. If I use a shandheld camera, I use a custom rig I built up with plenty of added weight. Wielding a sword is different from a flick knife, as nutcases says. Lighting and lenses, most definitely. I cannot think of anything...

    Cliches and mistakes

I love it. I'm tempted to name Hashem as being responsible for "lighting", as well.

    Cliches and mistakes

I love two of these ideas - characters drawing attention to the lights, and the TV trope. I'm not sure the latter would be able to work in this instance, but it's a very good idea. Thanks.

    Cliches and mistakes

The idea that it's satire will come across very quickly. A great deal of this will be due to acting performance, which I've found in comedy plays a very big role. I do like the idea of using the super slo-mo. I reckon I will use that. Thanks.

Oh, and I want to add in the "main character smoking and looking contemplative" scene somehow, before thats mentioned.

    Cliches and mistakes

So, I'm in the middle of a first draft of a satircal short about short films and all the cliches and mistakes that various student films, short makers, new film-makers, and YouTube celebrities bring in. To date, I've reviewed somewhere in the region of 5,000 short films, but would still like...

    Film Production Jokes

Director to actor: ".... so you approach the heroine and take her in your arms, then kiss her passionately. As you slowly lay her down on the bed, and begin to tear off her underwear, I want to see the raw animal nature of lust combined with sensuality that only two estranged soul-mates...

    Recent Inspirations & Recommendations

Around 5,000 short films, mainly by students and those who have YouTube accounts, as well as their... ahem... "advice" vdeos. I was just about to write a post about this as it happens, because I'm in the middle of a satirical screenplay about just this.

    Would you watch this film?

I'll watch pretty much anything, especially something outside the box. It's very difficult to judge how well something will be made until it has been made.

    The 1TB SD Card

Excatly my feeling. I'd rather lose 32 or 62 GB, that a whole TB if things go wrong. Obviously, if you're getting HD back ups it's not so bad, but I'd still be nervous.

    DCP Projection

Quick update, this is from last year's submission rules, para 31. http://www.sundance.org/pdf/submissions/2016_Submissions_FAQ.pdf 31) If my film is selected for the Festival, what exhibition formats do you accept? We accept DCP, and 35mm film prints for exhibition at the Festival. Feature...

    DCP Projection

Sundance do accept DCP in cinema aspect, but require a Bluray or ProRes backup sent as well. At least that was my understanding.
